What does Frank do next?

It was mentioned in another post that in the script in a part that wasn't filmed Frank goes back to his wife and kid. I disagree. I think Frank goes back to the life of being a thief. No attachments, no legitimate businesses. He leads the life that Robert De Niro does in Heat. When you feel the heat you leave everything behind. All Frank wants to do at this point is survive and not go back to prison.

I think either option is debatable..

I like to think he goes back to tuesday weld coz she's hot. :P

I think Frank moves on. He gets another identity. He starts a new life but his old life as a thief will always be just behind him. Who knows? He may have gone back to the old life for a few more scores. I definitely don't think he goes back to Tuesday Weld and the child. They are part of the past he has destroyed both literally and in his mind. He is a wanted man now and needs to keep them safe by staying away.

i bet he opens up a philly cheesesteak food truck.

Aloha, Mr. Hand.

Mann and Caan discuss this on the commentary track. Caan thinks he goes and finds them; Mann is more skeptical, saying "Not in the context of this movie."

In the script she goes to find him and ha been searching for five months and tells him his kids waiting for him in the hotel.

Would you put "SPOILER ALERT" in your subject line, please, OP?
Not everyone on these boards has seen this movie yet.
Thanks.

Why would you browse the forum, and threads in said forum, for a movie that you haven't even seen yet but has been out since 1981, if you don't want to be "spoiled"?

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you?

LOL

Never though of it until now, but "Thief" actually works pretty well as a prequel to "Heat", with Caan's character being DeNiro's before his "Don't let yourself get attached to anything..." motto. So I guess the next thing Frank does is move to L.A., change his name to Neil McCauley, get together his own crew, and start putting up big scores.

I read the script recently and Jessie (Weld) somehow finds Frank (Caan) after some time has passed.

I thought that he would go to them as he took care of the guys who wanted to control his life so no more danger. I did think either way he would still keep on stealing stuff lol

reply

Even though Frank get the bad guy he WONT go back to is wife. Frank lived by a certain code and once he deviated from that code the thugs took advantage of him so i doubt Frank would allow that to happen again

JCrusher723, you make a good point. Frank's take on life is very superficial, easily seen in the way he dealt with cops. He doesn't care if he has to die. But I do like to think - and note that I'm one of those people who prefer sad endings rather than the happily ever after ones - but there was also something in John's actions that point that he may actually go back to Jessie: he clearly ended the criminals, destroyed his house, bar and car dealership, and he made sure his friend Joseph was taking care of Jessie for the first 3 months, maybe because he wanted to make sure he knew where she was. He was keen on having a relationship with her, he wanted kids so much and his friends meant a great deal to him. But this could also point to his returning to heist.

It's really up to the viewer to decide; he was very adamant and straightforward while telling Jessie to leave, but now that his friend/partner is gone, he may as well go back to them. That's what I'm going for.
