Timothy Hutton Won His Oscar For The Wrong Role

I watched this movie in my Puerto Rico as the first part of a double-bill that concluded with MY BODYGUARD. 'tis customary in PR for the audience to perform a running commentary on the action in the screen, and this movie was no exception. A man told his wife: you will love him--pointing at Timothy Hutton--; he won the Oscar for this role. At the end of the movie, the wife enthusiastically admired Hutton's performance, and the husband replied: I told you; he won the Oscar. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he was thinking of ORDINARY PEOPLE; besides, I agreed with them: Hutton's heroic role in TAPS is much more impressive than the pitiful wimp he plays in Robert Redford's movie.

I completely agree with you. Also,it was worth mentioning that the presence of future great actors such as Tom Cruise and Sean Penn did help a lot

His performance in TAPS was good, but it doesn't come close to what he did in Ordinary People. He was incredible as Conrad Jarret. It was the role of a lifetime, and he'll never do anything better.

reply

Agreed. His role performance in Ordinary People in my opinion is the best performance I have ever seen. Although he was very good in Taps.

reply

He was far better in "Ordinary People."
Hutton was OK in "Taps," but better in "OP."
You think the character is a "pitiful wimp" because he needs therapy in *that* family? It was a great performance. Here, he sort of does a stock wanna-be military cadet performance. He was OK, but nothing special. A kid trying to act like an adult.

reply

His role in Falcon and the Snowman blows his work in Taps away.
