Was this a made for TV film, or was it released theatrically?

I remember HBO running this movie all the time up until about 1983, but I never remember this movie making it to theaters.

Well... Theaters in the US. It may have run theatrically elsewhere.

Just checked, the release date is August 30, 1981.Which was a Sunday. That would seem to point at a TV movie airing.

It did indeed have that TV Movie of the Week look but that doesn't automatically disparage the production. I chanced upon it by checking out Albert Salmi's films. It seemed fine to me via YouTube viewing.
It had some week patches but I would suspect that it made a compelling impact as a TV movie of the week. Carney
seemed to be having a blast in his role. I'd give it a 7.5 considering the assumed release venue.
With some editing and cutting it may have worked as a theatrical release and made a modest profit. It definitely had merit.

If you check out the release history it ran in the US but also overseas. I don't think they mention production costs or profit made. We should support IMDb with a few dollars on occasion. It is valuable site.
