Was it really that bad?
I haven't seen this film since it was first released, and I don't recall it being a bad film. Did I miss something that other people are griping about in their reviews?

shareIt is a nice adventure movie, i don't know what other people were expecting, but i suggest you to pick the DVD now that is available at long last. It is anything, but boring; not bad at all.

I just finished re-reading th book. It is the only Robin Cook Novel that doesn't have anything to do with the medical field. As I remember the book was way better than the movie. I had the good luck to see the King Tut Exhibit when it toured the US in 1978 (saw it in Seattle) so a lot of whet is talked about in the book and the movie were helped along by having seen the exhibit. With the recent vandalism in Egypt during the ouster of the current government it really brought home how precious and vital to Egypt's history these objects are. Two of the objects broken were on the tour and I hope they are able to repair them. This movie and book are about someone who cared enough to fight for the preservation and control of Egypt's past. It centers around the black market trade in antiquities and knotheads who only care about money and nothing else.
shareIt was borderline bad/good for me. I think the unnecessary romance, weird acting from the protagonist part and the surprise in the end is what drove me to dislike it.
I think you should view it for yourself and be the judge of it (if you haven't already).

It was rather forgettable and trumped by another archaeologist that year, Indiana Jones.
Its that man again!!
Thanks everyone, for the replies. I've been getting back into the adventure genre, so I'll pick up a copy to see how it holds up.

well its not good to say the least but not terrible. something you leave on while doing something else. When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
Yeah, it's pretty bad. Too long, too poorly scripted, minimal suspense and a lot of running around. Also occasionally funny--both intentionally and unintentionally--which totally breaks any meager sense of peril or danger the story is trying to build.
Basically there are only *2* good reasons to watch this film:
1. Great scenery and location photography of Egypt, in cities and ancient ruins (I found myself looking more often at the backgrounds than the actors).
2. Lesley-Anne Down and/or Frank Langella: depending on your sexual inclination, both are very easy on the eyes to watch perform in this lame story.

It's just very sleepy. If it had a half hour cut out of it, it would have been an okay random suspenser.
shareYeah I just caught it on TCM yesterday. Real snooze-fest. Nice scenery but that's it. Also, the heroine is kind of a wimp in this. Like what if Lara Croft was just another Pauline in distress?
shareThis is why few Robin Cook novels made it to the cinema. They just don't have much punch. More like beach reading.
shareI've seen it twice within the last month and I thought it was pleasant - a perfect Saturday afternoon movie.
It's worth it for the scenery if you like ancient Egypt.
What I find interesting is that the movie came out the same year as Raiders of the Lost Ark (Sphinx in February and Raiders in June) and almost everyone remembers or knows Raiders but very few know or remember this movie - that's how life works I guess.
