What does fungo mean in that context?
Also when shouting to the Cajuns, there is a ring visible on Peter Coyote's hand - it has a skull engraved. What is that - a marine ring?
My best guess is that Poole was reminding Reece that he's just a grunt National Guardsman, not a "real" soldier worthy of making important decisions. A fungo, as I'm sure you know, is a skinny, more flimsy type of baseball bat you use to hit balls for fielding practice, not a "real" bat that you'd ever use in a game. That might be the meaning to which Poole was alluding. I'm curious if this was an insult that was in more common use decades ago and then fell out of favor, now basically forgotten.
