There are some great user comments on here:

a poll was conducted in England, and Vassily Livanov and Vitaliy Solomin were found the best ever impersonation of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the movies all over the world

all world cinematographers (even British ones) admit Vassily Livanov is the best ever Sherlock Holmes

I'm not sure what these users are smoking, but most people in England have never heard of these Russian films and very few would ever have seen them.

Basil Rathbone, yes. Jeremy Brett, yes. Even Peter Cushing. But Vassily Livanov???

reply

LOL! ))

But these movies is very good and acting is cool! Unfortunately subtitles will make all acting silly...

reply

And bad dubbing

So you saw a picture in some cheesy museum. Big deal.

You saw a picture in a museum and seem to think this proves something. Well you are entitled to your opinions, however worthless they may be. Its just a pity that you can't take part in a simple discussion without insulting people and ranting like a deranged idiot.

*I'M* the one ranting like a deranged idiot?

Yep.

And you're still doing it. Now you're saying someone claimed this was a "conspiracy by the Russians to take over the world"! Your ramblings are so strange I can't tell if you're a troll, or just a bit thick.

As to whether the Russian films are the most faithful to Doyle, I really couldn't say as, like most people, I've never seen them. Which I seem to remember is the point I was originally making.

If you had actually read my posts, you would know I made no comment on the merits of the films, only on the extravagant claims of their fans.

reply

And YOU have no business making judgements on whether the claims are extravagant or not given YOU HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THE FILMS. You're extremely pathetic and close minded, and you would really benefit taking your head out of your butt long enough to actually watch the films before YOU go making extravagant nonsense claims.

I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse- Don Vito Corleone

Oh dear, another idiot who can't read.

You have a very small brain and shouldn't be allowed to use a computer unsupervised.

"however worthless they may be"
"ranting like a deranged idiot"
"can't take part in a simple discussion without insulting people"

Uhh, maybe it was conducted amongst those who actually know what they're talking about?

The review or reviews (you're quoting one or two of them) are badly written and over-the-top. However your post is petty and designed to get an emotional rise out of people.

I am sure that if you had just written that the quoted review is biased and not based on fact then you would have had some people agree with you. Instead you're implying that the sentiment in the reviews is shared evenly by a population of biased Russians.

It takes one person to write a dumb review and later spread the same review to several places. There is nothing wrong in pointing out the falaciousness of the comment, but this can be done respectfully. You don't need to wage war on all of the fans of these films over one schmuck's opinion.

reply

I completely agree, Chapaev!

With regard to other comments, I'd just like to add that whilst this movie is not widely known amongst the general public in the English-speaking world, it is nonetheless very highly regarded amongst Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts and frequently described as the best cinema version of a Holmes story in the extensive critical literature. One might disagree, but no-one could suggest that this is not a perfectly legitimate view.

The Jeremy Brett series, which most UK viewers would - I think - regard as definitive, was not of course intended for cinema :)

reply

I don't find these Soviet versions very entertaining either.
Their Holmes looks and sounds way too soft, for my taste.
I think Peter Cushing is the best Holmes ever - as close to the way he was described by Arthur Conan Doyle as I have ever seen.

reply

Really? I love these films/episodes. Nothing beats Brett in my opinion but I love this Holmes/Watson pair. Especially Vitaly as Watson.

Actually, I think they make a cute couple. In THotB I wanna hop right in bed with Watson amd warm him up.

But the productions are superb. The costumes, too. Caveats: Some of the smaller roles are hammed up by the actors, Sherlock isn't tall enough, and every so often the music sounds anachronistic.

All in all, awesome.

reply

Brett is the best in my opinion too, but I can't say enough how excited I am at finding a new series of Holmes shows, having watched all the Rathbone, Cushing (I think), and Brett ones; this Russian Baskervilles was as good as everyone said it was and quite authentic and likeable too.
