Yeah, that definitely occurred to me too. It struck me at the time that KANK was more progressive and advocated wanting more passion in your marriage a bit more, and I think that it does--but then I also thought that actually Amitabh and Rekha's characters, versus Shah Rukh's and Rani's, really aren't that different. Shah Rukh and Rani end up together, but they both feel just as obligated to return to their spouses and love them as best they can. It's only the spouses who are different, since they can't take the kind of wistful marriage that that would mean--which leaves SRK and Rani to be together without feeling like they've left their spouses in the lurch. I mean they do feel guilty first for about three years, but then they don't know that the other is all alone too and they do eventually allow themselves to be happy...anyway. I think that if Silsila had been made today it might have had a different ending--an ending more like KANK's.

I think both movies have a big flaw. In Silsila, they show a lack of connection between the husband-wife leading to the affair. They do a good job at showing why Amitabh and Rekha desired to have an affair with one another, but they didn't do a good job at showing why they go back to their spouses at the end.

On the other hand, KANK has the opposite problem. They never really explore the husband-wife relationship and why SRK and Rani are truly as upset with their spouses as they are. The reason I would say KANK is worse is because they never really did all that good of a job at showing why Rani and SRK desire to have a relationship with one another. Its like they are automatically happy when with one another and pissy when with their spouses.
