Sub-titles?

I do not remember if there were subtitles for the series, to explain the japanese in the earlier parts of the series, or if we were intentionally left out in the cold. anyone remember?

There were no subtitles. I think we were supposed to share in Blackthorne's experience. Narration was used to explain the more major moments spoken in Japanese only.
