Older Films Often Cheated...

It seems like a lot of films used to have their characters talking to themselves a LOT, sometimes in a voiceover of their inner monologue or just plain talking to themselves out loud. It always strikes me as lazy storytelling. I can see the need for it in theater, but in movies? Come on, show, don't tell...

I've seen it in recent films too. Not too long ago I was watching a movie (forgot the name) and the lead female kept talking out loud to herself and pointing out the obvious. It was overkill because we the audience can clearly see what was going on. I was thinking JUST SHUT UP ALREADY!!

For me, Keach's expository dialogue served to convey his character's lonelinesses. I think they got away with it in this one.
