explain 'the Boy'

the kid looking for Cartier's, what is up with him? Who IS Mrs Collins? was he just a street hustler

nice socks, man.....

reply

He must have been a hustler. No wonder Pauline Kael commented on the woman as really being gay men aspect of the film. I think that originated in the play itself but the film had atleast 3 guys throw themselves at Bissot. I think the character must have thought her his next client.

reply

I think he was a male prostitute of sorts...

Mrs. Collins was probably one of his regulars.

That being said, I have no idea why he decided to go after Liz...

It would have been nice if they had clarified that part better.

Here's to those who wish me well...

reply

Hmmmmmmmm...I don't THINK he was a male prostitute. Seriously, I think he thought Bisset was hot and put the moves on her. If he WAS a male prostitute wouldn't she have felt terrible about paying him? The next scene makes it clear that she looks and feels GREAT:) The age thing doesn't matter. When I first saw it in a theatre a guy behind me (who couldn't have been more than 17) whispered, "I wish I was him"!

reply

I always thought he was one.

I think Liz felt terrible anyway through most of the film about who she was falling into bed with. She attracted all the wrong guys and maybe even knew they were wrong beforehand on a subconscious level. I believe she was smart enough to know this guy was a pro. But it didnt matter. Maybe it felt great for a little while but the thrill was only temporary.

I think we're just gonna have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that.

SPOILER BELOW

Yes, I think he was a male prostitute, but Liz didn't care. Despite not openly considering herself a feminist, deep down she really felt she was and maybe felt empowered by the experience. Plus, I think she was just proving to herself that a young man could find her sexually attractive. After all, she was kind of coming onto Chris right before that but he wasn't giving in to her (at that point). The experience with the boy I feel gave her the courage to pursue something with Chris.

What is hysterical is that the scene ends and cuts into the next with Liz's line, "my problem is that I really am an old fashion girl".

Prostitute or not, she knew she was crossing a line having sex with someone half her age.

I agree with 'of sorts'. He may not have been a professional gigolo but he clearly was accustomed to serving older women who were in the position to do a few favors for him.

Mrs. Collins was probably one of his regulars.
I went back and forth on this one then I decided it didn't matter. When the clerk addressed her as Mrs. Collins it serves two purposes: It makes Liz uncomfortable because it's clear, not only to her but everyone else, that she is old enough to be the kid's mother and she's obviously not the first sugar mama type in his life.

I have no idea why he decided to go after Liz...
He was obviously able to zone in on the type of women who were desperate and needy for attention. By their reaction to him, he could tell how receptive and willing they would be.

It would have been nice if they had clarified that part better.
I think the way they left it in the movie is good. We don't know anything more about the kid than she does. By not knowing about him we learn more about her. She's so lonely and miserable she has sex with inappropriate and random people. Behaving in such risky behavior tells me that she doesn't think much of herself.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
