If the idea was to prevent the Nazis from getting the Ark of the Covenant and they had no clue where it was located...

why did Jones then find it for them by being seen digging nearby? He could have simply informed the US government, which was financing his mission, of his discovery and gone home. Or asked for their assistance to prevent the Nazis from taking it if he did decide to retrieve it.

reply

Because that wasn't his only reason for wanting to find it. He wanted to find it, see it, touch it, for himself.

Bingo , this guy gets it

reply

Because the plot required it. Otherwise it would have been a short boring movie

He was in disguise when he went into the map room to find the Well of Souls. The dig site where Indy found the ark was a bit a ways from where Belloq was digging. It was only through Marion they found it.

The Nazi's had found the lost city of Tannis and the map room, and they knew who had the head piece for the staff of Ra. It was just a matter of time before they found Ravenwood and gained the medallion.

I don't think the US was in any position to wage any sort of resistance to the Nazis pre-WW2. They were content over on their side of the globe, only helping in sly, covert ways. I doubt sending, say, a militia or squad over to the Middle East would have been a smart political move.

The U.S. government hired Indiana Jones because they were betting he would not only find the ark before the nazis, but that he would also TAKE POSSESSION OF IT THUS DENYING IT TO THE NAZIS.
