why did Jones then find it for them by being seen digging nearby? He could have simply informed the US government, which was financing his mission, of his discovery and gone home. Or asked for their assistance to prevent the Nazis from taking it if he did decide to retrieve it.

shareI don't think the US was in any position to wage any sort of resistance to the Nazis pre-WW2. They were content over on their side of the globe, only helping in sly, covert ways. I doubt sending, say, a militia or squad over to the Middle East would have been a smart political move.
