Indy is more of a noir character in this one
Everything about him -- his motivations, his background -- are so vague. I really like that. It was a stroke of genius to have him emerging from the shadows like he does at the start because it really set the tone for this mysterious figure. Belloq points out that wouldn't take much to make Indy like him, and at least with this incarnation of Indy, he could be right.
