I hadn't seen the movie since it first came out. I forgot that Cagney doesn't appear until around 3/4 of the movie. That's too bad because this was his last movie. At the time it was so cool that he was in a movie because it had been a long time since he had been in one.

Actually he appears in the beginning of the movie when he is introduced at the dinner table after the men crash through the door.

It wasn't his last movie. He made a tv movie a few years after "Ragtime" called "Terrible Joe Moran".

Yes, it's a shame that - other than his brief appearance at the beginning - he doesn't show up until late, but I was actually surprised at how substantial his role was. I was expecting not much more than a cameo and he actually has a fairly full-blooded role, and does a fine job with it.
