What was wrong with Freudstein's face?

I know he's supposed to be a zombie-like creature but why did he have a vagina mouth? He was also missing eyes but when the kid gets the torch out you can see to glowing eyes in the darkness ( I thought that bit was genuinely creepy). But his head looked like a cabbage and his mouth was vertical.

I did like how they made him look tall and gaunt though. Good costume.

Just two words: Lucio Fulci.

Bingo

I think Freudstein used the same plastic surgeon as Michael Jackson. But he did a better job on Michael Jackson after much practice and unfortunate mistakes. There were elements of Thriller in this movie somewhere.

THAT EXPLAINS IT!! Michael Jackson needed little boys in order to maintain his... uhm... appearance. Thanks!

We've met before, haven't we?

Freudstein is certainly one of the most bizarre looking zombies ever to grace the screen, he's got a head like a dried up old prune!

Not that I want to defend the makeup on this character, but ive seen replicas made of the face and its supposed to be the disintegrated area of where the nose and upper area of the front teeth meet. They were trying to make it look like that whole area had rotted off, but since the guy wearing the prosthetic HAD a nose, the execution came off looking weird. The eye area was supposed to be sunken in and half rotted.

I wonder if this film had the same makeup artist as Burial Ground. That movie also had a similar kind of bizarre and anatomically incorrect zombie faces.

Its probably just down to typical Fulci inconsistencies, but i like coming up with my own explanation for things so to me i assumed the eyes to be a demon or something from the beyond down there with Freudstein seeing as that house is one of the seven gates (or at least its assumed to be as its part of the gates of hell trilogy) and its just watching and lurking. Or perhaps its twisted souls of one of Freudsteins victims?

But either way, i agree with you that the eyes were really creepy, more movies need to do the "glowing eyes in the darkness" thing, i will always think thats a creepy way to show a monster or something evil, and it never gets old for me.
