Yeah ummm help?

If the dead dr whatever Freud something or the other needs to kill people to revitalize himself, how exactly is he doing this? It just seems more like he's brutally killing people, how does this exactly assist in revitalizing him? Other than this strange event, I find this to be a rather good old horror movie...
