Glossary of slang from Puberty Blues

Being an American, I wasn't familiar with the awesome slang that was being thrown around in the movie. I'm trying to remember all the cuss words and slang but I can only think of a few like "slack-ass molls". Please enlighten an ignorant American on the other slang in the movie.

Thanks!

reply

Hey ignorant American! just joking. slack ass moles is just purely an insult "slack ass" meaning lazy and mole meaning ugly, disgusting, slutty or whore even. im used to this "Slang" i didn't even realise it was slang so i guess im just an ignorant Australian. i can't think of any other words tho from the movie. sorry!

DEAD-SET!

LMAO Ignorant American! =D

hi!

Bite ya bum! -means to shut up (not really used these days in australia, must be a 70s thing)

Comin out for a root? - pretty obvious but anyway its a sexual meanin

Rack off! = get lost etc

slag = offensive term for a woman

and btw in aust we dont say ass...we say arse ;-)

I think this movie is cool and you know theres probably not a lot that has changed in high schools since this movie came out.Kids still smoke in dunnies (toilets)and girls still get peer pressured into sleeping with boys to fit in.

Heaps you've missed!!

On the bus Cheryl is referred to as a box tosser and a fish faced mole
Mole is a particularly good one (especially towards Freida!)
When the girls are walking up the beach with their surfboard the insults come a-flyin' - Westies, toilets, mole, etc etc - its classic!!!

I absolutely love this movie

reply

i love the term 'box tosser'.

reply

Im down in melbs and we say ass.

Oh and arse was just the english pronounciation of ass not a real word.

reply

Both are real words innit. This Melbournian would say 'arse' generally, especially when referring to the anus specifically ("stick it up your arse" etc). However, I would switch to 'ass' in the context of distinctly American phrases, especially those relating to the rump as a whole ("free your mind and your ass will follow"; "shake that ass" etc).

I don't think I'm completely alone in this. (I may however be alone in analysing it this deeply. LOL.)

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.

reply

Most Melbournians I know say 'arse' as well. I enjoyed your analysis!

reply

-Hey! Stop Bullsh*tting this poor Yank! "Slack arse Moll", not "Mole"!! "Slack arse" means lazy as well as flabby buttocks. Arse is of course from the German
"Arsch" & "Moll" is how it's always been spelt! An American Term, in fact: "Ganster's Moll". I lived on Cronulla beach at the time, can't say I ever met the two Sheilas in particular, it was REALLY No Biggie that they wanted to surf.Lots of girls were surfing.

reply

In Australia ugly girls were refered to as 'moles'. At least it was 'mole' when i was at high school in Sydney from 1985-1989. Ugly girls were always called 'mole'. i.e. 'rack off you mole' ;-)

reply

I grew up in the Western suburbs of Sydney NSW, and in the 1970's a moll / mole was a word that used for a girl that had low morals and usually slept around. Slack arse meant lazy...

reply

It's definitely "moll" people. This has been a word for prostitute for hundreds of years. A mole is a small burrowing animal.

u no ur old when u still spell ot moll....man these days its mole...back then it was moll but now its mole, smae meaning diff spelling.

When I was young we spelt smae > s-a-m-e, it was pronounced same.

Also we spelt u = y-o-u

As well we spelt ur = y-o-u-r

There was also a word that was known as - know, as in know what I mean. And there was the other no, as in no you can't spell very good.

And we had these things called schools, that had pens and paper, you learnt things there, like proper spelling.

It's funny that no matter what film/television show you look up on IMDB.com there's always a post in the message boards that gets completely off-topic with people trying to correct one and other. Don't get me, wrong - your post was hilarious. I just thought it was interesting, that's all.

-Well...You were spelling it, WRONG, then weren't You? It's Moll...You may very well pronounce it in typical Aussie Strine as "Mole"(Why not Yiddish? "Moel"?!)
but it implies a low-life Skag/Slut type who hangs around with certain degenerate types(eg: Gangsters!)& is "Easy"--ergo: "Moll"
Don't ever challenge Me again:)

Check again kid, I put the two options of spelling the word exactly as - moll / mole... One option was for the smart people like me, one option was for the stupid people like you...

kimandjim-1,

C'mon now, let's not fight huh?

No one's is superiour to anyone one else, here, pretend as one might .

The poster you're criticising might have been writing in the style that he or she did, for effect rather than out of a desire to be scrupulously grammatically correct.

Australian slang/Puberty Blues slang. Here's some I picked up from the book!

Moll (slackarse moll, fish face moll, etc.) - slut

Bankies - people from Bankstown; losers

Dunny - toilet

Rack off! - get lost; fu ck off, etc.

Bite ya bum! - shut up

Jungle Rash - itching and chaffing of the testicles from wet boardshorts

Root - a fu ck =D

I'm surprised an American has seen this movie, actually. And really, alot of this slang is still used in Australia today.

Shogun,

Don't call yourself an ignorant American, just because you aren't up on the latest and greatest slang from another nation, please.
You are just setting yourself up for needless ridicule, then.

Here is the BEST online site for looking up much of the slang, that you hear in this film, Mate:

except these terms are rarely used except by the incredibly occa aussie or the ultimate bogan.
ive never heard anyone say "rack off" except on old episodes of home & away in the 1990s.

people say slut instead of mole.

doubt dunny is used anywhere outside of regional australia.

never even heard of "bita ya bum", "jungle rash", or "bankies" (although, im not from sydney).

@ the OP: I raised a topic about this, as well. Look down the board a piece for it.
My topic was geared more towards which slang terms were still used today.
