Question...
How well-known is this film?
shareIn Australia, reasonably well known, especially by 30 and 40-somethings.
shareThe film was very well known and the book was exceptionally well known as became part of many highschool English classes.
I think both girls are still writing-at least I have seen Nell Schofield's name on credits for ABC shows.
Sadly I did not live in Cronulla or by the beach so the surfie chick was unknown to me. I am short fat and hairy and could barely swim let alone surf , so I think that even if I had been on the beaches I think all the surfie chicks would have seen past me just as women do to this day.
A lot to be said for innocent carefree days-alien to this competitative multi-cultural over populated world in which we live.
Most Australian kids know of this movie...
The book was the one book in the schools collection that everyone wanted to borrow...
I first saw the movie a few years ago and loved it! I had known about it since i was about 12 or 13 (im 24 now...) it only came to dvd in australia about 4 or 5 years ago.
I grew up near the beach not that particular one but its a perfect depiction of how it really is/was...!!!
Well i've been waiting 25 years to see this movie.. i was 11 or 12 when it was at the cinema & being advertised on TV.. would love to have been able to see it at that time but was too young... picked it up on sale today.. first time i had seen it at a discounted price.. about to watch now... wonder if it will be worth the wait.
shareNot bad.. typical Aussie from that era... i think i would have really enjoyed it if i could have watched it in my teens.... still enjoyed it but could have related to it more back then.
shareI moved to Sydney (from Melbourne) as an adult in the late nineties and one of the first things I did when my brothers came to visit was to drive down to the infamous Cronulla beach to see where the "slack-arsed moles" abounded.
We loved this film as kids/young teenagers (probably too young to be watching it really) and my brothers (only about 9 or 10 at the time) had a lot of the dialogue memorised from watching it over and over on video. One of my brothers now works for the company that distributes this film on dvd and recently sent me a copy. Can't wait to watch it again!
The book was mandatory reading in most english calsses during the early to mid 80's, the 'No retreat-No surrebder' took over. :)
Natrually any movie featuing teenage sex issues was popular, especially since 12yo kids weren't supposed to watch it ("ewe mum, what's a period?"). :)
Discovered this charming gem at my local library (Chicago, IL USA) in the VHS tape collection. If it's not "popular", it is pretty significant.
