flashback to good times

I'm 42 (m) and I love this movie.
It takes me back to the simple life on Cronulla beach, Northies Hotel..early 80s
The club across the road, I forget what that club was called there was the Radiators, Rosey Tatts and others playing...the club is long gone now
Can someone tell me what the name of the club was right near the beach at Cronulla in the 70s and early 80s.?

reply

Bit late now but for what it's worth it was Cronulla workers. The night club part was called Jokers if i remember right.

I had a fish named Sam he lived in a bowl........

reply

Ahhh, the Cronulla Workers Club! Midnight Oil, the Angels, the Radiators, Mental As Anything. I saw them all there!

Watching this movie now, it was set in an era when life seemed to be so simple, however as a teenager at the time finding out about life could be confussing! The pub band scene was excellent during the 70's and 80's. How times have changed.

Remember the old ad - Football, Meat Pies, Kangeroo's and Holden Cars, Great days they were...

I know what you mean! I was born in Sutherland, but spent those times of my life on the Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads/Miami to be more precise.

I'm American, and 'bout your age(F) ...

I liked the film much better than the oh-so-corny Trailer. I laughed my head off at the Trailer. The film's theme song is a scream, as well. The lyrics are priceless ... Tell me, all Aussie coming of age trailers aren't like this, I am begging.

I liked the film, even for it's cutesy-poo moments and qualities. I must say though that what stymied me, was all the unfamiliar slang, as our slang would be to you, I dare say. I had fun looking up all the words (Dead set meaning truth, or true for example) online. I learnt a thing or two.

Your response is amusing and interesting..You have to remember that this film was made 30 y ago and the aussie film industry wasnt as sleek, experienced and wealthy as Hollywood.

The lifestyle of my sydney then was something an American girl might have never experienced..as for me understanding your slang..Australians know all about US culture because of 50 y of movies and TV. Americans are only beginning to see more of australia and therein is the learning curve..lol..there are hundreds of such expressions you would love

I re-read my response. Hadn't meant to take the *p* out of you all, sorry. Just that the Trailer really is awfully funny, and the film has its moments, if you will.

Yes, I know Aussies know all about Americans. Shameful that we don't know that much about you, except that Aborigines are YOUR natives, but not much more (unless we go there on vacay or live there). I was watching films on YT where an Aussie lady was whingeing about being asked what language they speak Down Under, and ... what sort of currency they use. Felt terribly embarrassed at the naivete of my Countrymen, to be honest with you.

Aussies aren't weird. Actually you lot are quite appealing. The guys are real spunks and the sheilas are beaut and toned. I like the laid-backness, too. Very appealing lot, you.

I am wondering though: What's the cast of the film doing nowadays? You know, perhaps?

For a great movie all about a single Aussie guy, google a site called Plenty of Fish. Youll need to click 'search' along the top, then on the next page username, type tezzza (with 3 zs) Im the sydney guy

And if you can't organize a room you can always hop into a 1980's model sandman panel van, get two tickets to Taren point drive in movie theatre and see where the night leads....Sort of like homage paying to the genre that bought you 2 crazy kids together.

Had to come in and post as this is currently airing on ABC 2 tonight and its awesome , what a blast from the past!

I soooooooooo miss Northies, its still there ofcourse but nowhere near the same as the 90's and probably 80's too!

Anyone here remember Selena's ? How about Sweethearts ? or Hill St and the Roundabout? geeze Sydney has sure changed!

reply

I agree. I've never seen the film before tonight, wasn't even born when it was made, and didn't grow up in that kind of culture, but it was great hearing all the old slang that was prevalent back when I was in primary school but I haven't really heard since. It's sad how americanised our words have become.

reply

Yes I remember all those places, can you believe we used to go out and get into the clubs at 16!...ah, Australia in the 80's, heaven on earth.

I had a fish named Sam he lived in a bowl........

reply

I couldn't agree more with the title. I was only 7 years old in 1981, but still remember the early 80's and they were great times, far better than today.

reply

Ah yes, the good old simple life where it was common practice for guys to pressure girls for sex, treat them as slaves, verbally harass them, and generally show them no respect whatsoever. Brings back so much nostalgia because sexist behaviour isn't tolerated as much anymore.

reply

Good times to an outward observer, or maybe in a nostalgic sense, but the film is undercut with a bleak sadness, albeit with an uplifting ending which suggests a vindication, or a happy indifference, for the lead actresses. A lot of these girls were coerced into sex under false pretext, and some weren't even coerced, they were practically raped. It's a scathing account of high school and the plight for popularity, and an account of the sexist surfer culture of 80s Australia. The authors of the book, Carey and Lette, saw the inequality and decided to document it. It was never really suppose to be a love-letter to this time, but rather a darkly comedic indictment of it.
