non-halloween/friday1 3th slashers with high-ish production values??

hi,

i just bought this as "rosemary's killer" (uncut) on DVD here in the UK, i had never heard of it but i thought i'd give it a try, thinking it would be a crappy cheesy slasher (which i love btw)

anyways, i loved it! in fact, considering it was fairly well-acted, tense and with great gore, i can't believe i had never heard of it!

so....can anyone point me in the right direction, i'm after slasher films from the early 80s which were fairly well acted (im not after oscar material but you know what i mean!), tense and/or gory and looks good on DVD, region 1 or 2.

I've got so much horrendous cheesy stuff on vhs/dvd which i like as a laugh, (the mutilator/fall break, aerobicide, pieces, crap like that), but only because i love "bad movies" (including non-horror stuff)

so anymore films that you would put in the same category as the films listed below? ones that aren't just guilty pleasures, and are good movies in their own right.......???

Black Christmas
Halloweens 1+2 + Fridays 1+2+4
Rosemary's Killer/The Prowler
The Burning
My Bloody Valentine

let me know and i'll check em out!

thanks.
Rob

awesome, thanks for the response matey...

i'm definitely going to track some of these down! i didn't mention "terror train" because i found it to be quite dull, even though jamie lee's final chase was good and made up for the rest... also N.O.E.S. i didn't mention because i never think of it as a slasher film (even though it is really.....) GREAT film that....

i seem to stumble upon real low-budget hell - (me and the guys at uni regularly have beer-n-bad-movie sessions and i'm usually seen trawling through bargain bins for £1.00 dvds!) yesterday i watched a slasher film called "offerings"... which although hilarious was completely devoid of any redeemable qualities whatsoever!

anyways, i think i'm going to try "just before dawn", amazon has a copy for £2.97 !!!! woohoo

thanks again for the list buddy!

i'm glad - even though i love horror films i'm only 20 so a lot of these movies are from before i was born, but i prefer them 1000% more to the new stuff in the cinema at the mo... it's cool that someone actually is helping me out as opposed to rolling their eyes at the fact that i haven't watched hell night, and has never heard of just before dawn!

i'll give "hell night" a go, i see it has linda blair in it! cool... i'll refrain from getting the 3 quid dvd copy of J.D.D if there's a better print out there, thanks for the info - there's nothing worse than bad picture quality - i've got a version of "the mutilator" which is so grainy and dark in places you don't have a clue what's going on!

anyways, thanks for the troma tip, our favourite drinking movies are manos hands of fate, granny, zombie holocaust, troll2, pieces, redneck zombies (which is troma i believe??), leprechaun 2, aerobicide, the dark power (my personal favourite!)head cheerleader dead cheerleader, and more.... it was through this love of crappy movies that i started to stumble across "good" slashers which were not friday13ths and halloweens, and now i want more!

thanks again

Head Cheerleader, Dead Cheerleader: isn't that the one where someone gets her boob chopped off with the turtles? Who was the killer again?

Personally I think most of the films in Holy Ferret's list are rubbish, but the Prom Night analysis is right on, it's a classic. Not the best horror film you'll ever see, but certainly memorable and ultimately completely different to all the other stuff released around this period.

Most of the films in that list are snooze worthy for one reason or another.

Terror Train - seriously, boring. Still, the local DVD has a nice insert with Prom Night advertising on it - great for my website!
Hell Night - watched the first hour on DVD and couldn't get into it, still haven't watched the whole thing.
JBD - I've watched it once and since tried to watch it again... I still can't get into it, not even George Kennedy can make this one work. Squirm also didn't do it for me, FWIW.

I was genuinely surprised by Rosemary's Killer (local and preferred title). Gory but still surprisingly effective little thriller. Ditto The Burning. I got them around the same time about 10 years ago, expecting the usual slasher crap, but was utterly stunned by both of them!

But why I'm replying to a an old thread I have no idea - this always happens when I come researching for my ebay items!

I'd check out some Italian flicks, that, although technically of the "giallo" subgenre, would still entice a slasher fan seeking something with a higher standard.

Tenebre
Deep Red
Twitch of the Death Nerve/Bay of Blood
Blood and Black Lace

Check out Madman. It is no masterpiece, but it has some decent kills. Not one of the best, but kinda fun in a bad movie way.

The Funhouse is a good one that's kind of underrated. It's directed by Tobe Hooper.

Here's a link to the trailer if you want to check it out.
