DVD vs. VHS

Is some of the nudity fogged in the VHS like on the DVD?

reply

Yes. There's also a scene that was slo-moed to extend a censor's cut.

Why the heck would they re-edit the movie for DVD???

I loved this movie back in the 1980s on video-tape. Is it worth buying it on DVD...or are the changes noticeable?

For my pre-pubesent self back in the mid-1980s, this was the greatest turn-on movie. Do the edits kill it?

Wait I'm confused.. In the VHS.. is the area fogged out or not?

Just to clarify.. I'm not an obsessive pervert here.. (Much) But I have waited 20 years to see this film since I saw a CUT version on Fox in 1987. I can't tell you how jarring it was to go through a whole striptease and then see the aforementioned area fuzzed out. Me and my wife were enjoying the movie but that's just a straight moodkiller. So if there's any version without that particular bit fogged out.. I WANNA KNOW!

When I found out it was a body-double, I stopped caring (although I think the original print was unfogged... most people probably got their copy from an Asian source, where the fogging effect is de rigueur). The fat kid made the movie funny with his worldly philosophy, though. You're better off watching L'Insegnante, starring Edwige Fenech - no body doubles there

Fair enough.. I'm not hung up on that whole authenticity thing.. It's a movie.. everything's fake.. so why would I be offended by a body double :)

I will check out L'Insegnante.. me and the wife love those kind of movies. :)

Times have changed since 1981. Can you imagine the outcry if something like that was made in 2006?

I watched this for the 1st time on showtime last night. It really was a funny movie. I also thought it was funny because it would never be made again in this day and age. Its very taboo. Religeous zealots would probably burn down theaters for showing this movie. The remake would be lame though. It would be a rated pg-13 Disney movie. I was totally cheering on that kid. Sorry Lance Armstrong, that kid is my new hero.

I assure you I am no religeous zealot, and I remember sneaking peeks at movies like this in the 80's, but it really does look different when you have teenage kids of your own. My daughter is a young teen, and just thinking if someone ever put her through that kind of pressurized seduction...my son is only three, but I feel confident I won't be looking at him as an adult sexual creature when he's fifteen. I know men who had affairs with grown women when they were still children, and neither of them think it's cool now--it involves a lot of head play and emotional scarring. The double standard in this country is sad and scary...and it's amazing that this film was in theaters such a short time ago. No, I'm not a zealot...but I'm a woman, and I guess that makes all the difference in point of view. -M

I watch this on DVD the other day, and during the love scens when the camera panned to her mid section a little white circle pops up covering her female part. Why did they do this? My thinking is if they would have shown it then the movie would have got an X Rating. Perhaps I should watch it agin in the directors commentary. Does anyone know?

It's from a transfer done for Korea, where that sort of censorship is the norm due to the laws there. I don't know why they used it for the US DVD, it could have been a mistake. I once saw this on broadcast TV uncensored!

reply

Thank you. Did not know about the censorship thing. it's to bad the maid did not stay. Also funny that the boy and his dad, are just alike when it comes to women. I also wonder if his dad had some idea what was going on. Just my thoughts.

What about Betamax?

I had a VHS copy that was totally uncesored and I remember seeing the scene in which Ms. Mallow and Philly are screwing and then he says "Am I hurting you?" and then she "dies".

Slowed down for the DVD, stupid. It's funny because they show that big long sex scene at the end but they can't show them going up and down under a blanket. Stupid.

Only people with money say that money doesn't matter.
