Does anybody think...

That Prince of the City is one of the most underrated films of all time. I think it is.

Not underrated with me - from 1981-1994 it was my favorite movie of all-time.

1) PULP FICTION (1994)
2) PRINCE OF THE CITY (1981)
3) A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971)
4) AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999)
5) CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989)
6) THE GODFATHER (1972)
7) IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)
8) GOODFELLAS (1990)
9) THE GODFATHER : PART II (1974)
10) NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO (1989)

I completely agree and check the awesome line from Amazon.com's review on 'Prince':

"If there was any justice in Hollywood, Prince of the City would have been Treat Williams's star-making breakthrough, his Serpico (which Lumet also directed). But this film couldn't get arrested at the box office and was criminally snubbed by the Academy. Due to its length and gritty, profane dialogue, it is severely compromised when broadcast on network TV."

(TELL ME ABOUT IT!) - Williams DID get a Golden Globe nomination, however.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

Sidney Lumet has already recorded the audio track & the DVD should be out next year. Along with Police Squad (TV), this is the one I have been wating for the most.

Not much longer to wait - DVD is available for pre-order on Amazon - May 22 release date.

It did get a best screenplay nomination. But I agree, it was absolutely underrated.

reply

Yes. Was there a better American film made in the 1980's? I like Prince of the City better than any of the films that won Best Picture from 1980-89. Lumet was named Best Director by the NY Film Critics Circle.

reply

Sydney Lumet has always been one of my favorite American directors and he really is one of the greatest, just look at how long he has been making films and almost all of them are equally good. Only Robert Altman, bless his soul, has been working longer. Sydney has a way of capturing the viewer with his incredible way of realistic storytelling.

Be glad, they'd probably remake it if it were more well known.

"If Mad Max Fury Road is an 8 (I gave it a 1). Then I'll use 8 for OK, 9 is better, 10 is best."

reply

It seems to me,not so much underrated as unknown. It just seems to be that it did not get nearly as much attention as warranted.

The movie is too long-winded. Hard to sit through
