Could have been a series

I know this was just supposed to be one of the many "message" movies that television was doing in the 1970's and 1980's, but I could see this becoming a series that dealt with the tribulations of a family who had to move from a rural setting to an urban one. The series could have explored dealing with a different way of life; the daughter's adjustment to the big city; the continuing struggle to develop literacy.

I know series like "Dallas" and "Dynasty" were gaining a huge following during the 1980's while programs like "The Waltons" and "Little House on the Prairie" were losing steam, so maybe the time wasn't right--and some of the acting needed to be a little more polished to wear well week after week--but I think it would have made an interesting program.

I agree that this could have been more than just a TV movie. We could have seen Jesse making progress in reading and adjusting to Cincinnati. And as much as I love Johnny Cash, I think a weekly series would have helped him better develop his acting skills. Sadly, it's too late now.
