Did anyone actually use the scratch n sniff card?

Some of the smells were a bit off but I could definitely smell the pepperoni and unfortunately the feces. Odorama definitely made the movie a hilarious experience!

I have the now out-of-print double set version which was packaged with Desperate Living. The card is really calling me to scratch it, but I'm afraid to, as I'd like to keep the package in as near-mint condition as possible.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

I saw it in the theater and still have a couple of the original scratch 'n' sniff cards! Yes we used them in the theater. I've probably used the dvd ones but maybe just once.

The smell thing can only have it's full effect if you're watching the movie for the first time and don't know what's coming. If you didn't use it then, it's kind of pointless for a second viewing. Best to donate it to someone who hasn't seen the movie yet. Then laugh at their reactions (if the smells haven't expired yet by this point).

(Spoiler alert)
I saw Polyester when it first came out. There was a stack of scratch-'n-sniff cards in the lobby so I grabbed three. At one point, somebody was moving to hand Francine a large bouquet of flowers, there was a prompt to scratch a number. Just as all of us were raising the cards to our noses, suddenly the flowers were yanked away and some filthy and decrepit sneakers were thrust @ Francine. It was one of the funniest moments in the movie and, to me, epitomizes the humor of John Waters...
BTW, I sold my one remaining card on eBay a few years back for about $20.

I got a scratch n sniff with a VHS rental in the 80s and remember they all smelt like a fart.

I got to do the scratch and sniff card when I went with all my college buddies when the movie came out. I hung up the scratch and sniff card on my bulletin board for the rest of the year when we got back to the dorm.

I went to a recent theatre screening that distributed the scratch n sniff cards. I was kind of disappointed with the fart one - it was weird, but not nearly as nasty as I'd anticipated - but the others were a lot of fun. I recall the kitchen gas being the strongest.

I couldn't imagine watching this without the card, at least for the first viewing, as there were multiple places where, for all intents and purposes, the smells functioned as the punchline - the worn-out shoe reveal being a prime example. That wouldn't have been half as funny if you couldn't appreciate that the gag was supposed to be on you.

Did the forgotten generations scream or go full of resignation, quietly protesting innocence?

Saw it in the theatre during its first run with the card, which was really essential to "experiencing" the flick

That would have been so COOL!

We tried to use them way back when the movie was first run but the theater was too dark to see the cards properly.

I just saw this as a revival with new scratch and sniff cards, and most of the smells seemed "off" to me – other than No. 1 (the rose), they smelled either good or bad, but didn't really resemble what they were supposed to smell like.

I'm wondering if anyone who has both cards (if the odors on the 1981 cards are still detectable) can comment on whether the current cards are similar to the original ones?
