Female version

I've been interested in finding a version of this film with a more female slant and was looking for any tips. Anything that explores the same issues but with a female lead preferably if it preserves the honesty (I know movies with female leads tend to go for glam and shock, but I figured it was worth a shot.) language does not matter, also I am not looking for one of those pornographic movies disguised as a documentary (The ones with about ten minutes of substance wrapped around 90 minutes of sex.)

Well, if anyone can help that would be amazing.

A Female version of Pixote ? I can't think of any movie but if you are looking for powerful & realistic movies that centers around teens girls and that deals with prostitution, violence, crime, rape, etc...then I can't agree more with ifcr2010 about Lilja 4ever, it's an excellent movie with a terrific lead performance.

Some others that come to my mind :

Storie di vita e malavita (1975)
Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)
Bounce Ko Gals (1997)
König der Diebe (2004)

I'm in complete agreement with the original poster. Pixote is a powerful movie. But I'm a heterosexual man and I find it hard to feel any desire towards boys. If there was a similar movie about girls, it would be much easier for me to get into the movie. The previous poster already suggested some great movies, but I have one that is even closer to Pixote, because it's also from Latin America. It's called La vendedora de rosas (1998). This one should satisfy all your needs, dear original poster.

That's a great movie as well that also used real street kids as actors.

I know this is old, but if you're still interested.

There's some good realistic movies like "Who the hell is Juliette?" that is a documentary about a young Cuban girl, who works as a model & a prostitute.

"The Rose Seller" actually uses street kids as actors in a story about a girl who survives selling roses in Colombia.

"Violet Perfume" is a movie about Mexican girls dealing with sexual assault, poverty, and child abuse.

"Girlhood" is a French movie about a young girl growing coming of age in the ghetto of Paris. This movie also uses real kids as actors

"Divines" is another French movie about 2 young girls growing up in poverty in the ghettos of France. Neither of the actresses were professionals at the time they shot the movie
