You should check Walter Salles films such as Central Station and Behind the Sun, Beto Brant's The Trespasser and Lais Bodazky's Brainstorm.
Enjoy it!

hum...considering the state of brazilian cinema today, good luck at finding anything decent - and, for Christ, stay away from Walter Salles & co. - biggest, all-time turd of Brazilian cinema!!!

reply

c´mon, central station is very good.

reply

sborges,

Why do you criticize Walter Salles?

reply

Carandiru was pretty good. It's based on the real prison and incident in Brazil.

Central do Brasil (Central Station)
Abril Despadecado (Behind the sun)
O Homem que copiava (the man who copied)
o auto da compadecida
Os Dois Filhos de Francisco
Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) (not technically brazilian cinema...but in many ways it is)

Ha muitos outros ahinda! Felicidade!

For lovers of beautiful film photography, you must watch Central do Brasil (Central Station) by cinematographer Walter Carvalho. The guy is a genius with a motion picture camera!

reply

you shoudn't miss To the Left of the Father.

Cidade Baixa (2005)
Casa de Areia (2005)
Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus (2005)

Try 'O baixio das bestas'

reply

Agreed - "To The Left of the Father" (Lavoura Arcaica, dir. Luiz Fernando Carvalho, 2001) is an absolute masterpiece.

Without you, today's emotions would be the scurf of yesterday's.

The only Brazilian Film I've ever seen was "Black Orpheus." It is excellent.

(A previous poster said this was not technically a Brazilian film. what did
he or she mean by this?)

Terra em Transe
Limite
Vidas Secas
Deus e o Diabo na Terra do sol

for me these are the only true masterpicec of Brazilian cinema. Pixote is a great film, almost a masterpiece but Cidade de Deus is "a false great film", sketchy and excessive, the most overrated movie of this century.
