I have to admit that I'm not really sure that PIPPIN would work as a movie...it's a very theatrical piece, but looking at those casting possibilities, the one thing that did catch my eye was the thought of Jesse L.Martin as the Leading Player...I think he would be fabulous in that role. Josh Groban could certainly sing the role of Pippin, but the role requires someone who can act too. For me the ideal Pippin would be Josh Groban's voice coming out of Jake Gyllenhaal.

Jake Gyllenhaal actually has a good singing voice, FYI.

Having seen him in a fully dramatic role (Boss on Showtime), Josh Groban is also a decent actor.

reply

I think you are confusing Jonathan Groff with Josh Groban. Groff would be an excellent PIPPIN.

Thank you, thank you--you're most kind. In fact you're every kind.

Here's my pitch for the film:

The setting is the late 60's at Carnegie Mellon (a nod to where Stephen Schwartz first conceived the show), where a soon-to-be graduate enters a circus (a nod to the current Broadway revival) performed by the players telling the story of Pippin where the college student then starts to imagine the real story taking place with him as Pippin, because the two share something together, they are looking for their "corners of the sky". And the story would sometimes be interrupted by the Player numbers (kind of like in The Princess Bride).

I'm afraid that the result would be like the filming of Hair. The time has passed. And the country doesn't want to see something that is as dark as Pippin. I think Chicago is as dark as audiences today want to get.
