The most under-rated.

I think this is one of the most under-rated films of the last 30 years. Though not perfect, (I think Steve Martin's performance is a bit over-wrought in the non-musical sequences, and misses out on the blind optimism and perkiness in the face of disaster that Bob Hoskins brought to the role). It deserved a much better audience. I am glad it is being shown at the upcoming Turner Classic Films Festival in Hollywood ... maybe it will get a de-luxe dvd release one day.

Anther cruelly neglected film of the period is Oh, What A Lovely War.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

I do like the film but I think the series is better. I think you will find that the ratings it gets are from fans of the original.

In regards to the OP, I think this and "Oh What a Lovely War" are both greatly underappreciated films--both far better directed than the films which the Academy nominated--and in Richard Attenborough's case, awarded--them for.
