Steve Martin?! Seriously?

The original TV series was brilliant so god knows why anyone thought a re-make was necessary.

I love Steve Martin, but as Arthur?! Seriously? What a preposterous piece of casting!

reply

I feel the same way, though probably double as I have always hated Steve Martin and could never see how people like him and Chevy Chase are viewed as funny. And are given lead roles to boot.

Steve Martin has become quite a good actor, but he wasn't at the time of this movie. I've wondered how it might have turned out with Christopher Walken in the lead role. He certainly had the dancing chops.

reply

I thought that Martin did a remarkable job in his dancing scenes, for an actor not trained in dance. He reportedly spent six months preparing in a studio before the film started production. Walken, of course, was a trained dancer, and I agree that he would have been at least as good in the lead role.

I thought Martim danced wonderfully. Walken was great, as always. I'd watch this whole thing just to see Christopher Walken.

But the film was just too weird. I got it, I really did, but the grim parts were so terribly grim, the contrast with the musical/dance numbers was just too jarring for me.
