Where is this shot?

Can anyone tell me where the shooting location for this was?

What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully?

reply

My understanding is that it was actually shot at a lake in New Hampshire, because of some personal association that the director had with the site. Maybe someone else can be a little more specific?

The entire film was shot on location in New Hampshire, virtually all of it at Squam Lake. (If you look for it on a map, it's a few miles east of Plymouth, NH.) The only exceptions were the scenes of Billy joy-riding in the boat. Those shots were taken from a helicopter over nearby (and much larger) Lake Winnipesaukee.

Thanks for the info people.

For further clarification, as someone who knows Ernest (the author) personally and lived on "Golden Pond" myself, the shots of a large lake with sunset were also shot on Winnipesaukee.

What town is Squam Lake in?

reply

It's mostly in Holderness, although it borders a couple other towns.

It's all right there, on the main page, just click FILMING LOCATIONS and all is revealed.

It was shot on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Squam is a lovely lake and its sisters Little Squam and Winnnesquam are just as beautiful. You can actually take a tour boat around the lake and see all the location shots, including the camp where it was filmed. Unfortunately, the popularity of this movie saw a huge increase in land purchases on Squam Lake, and it has become a playground for the ultra wealthy. Few old timers and locals remain on "Golden Pond" these days, but it is still a gorgeous area and well worth a visit.

"it has become a playground for the ultra wealthy."

That's typical. When I was a boy, we used to travel to Colorado almost every summer for backpacking/fishing & occassionally we would stop in Aspen. Before it was "discovered" by movie stars & athletes, it was a quaint, little, scenic town with mostly locals. Nowadays, it caters to super wealthy outsiders & a regular person can barely afford to stay there let alone buy a house. Is there any nice scenic place (national parks aside) that rich people don't ruin for all us "normal" people? I think not.
