Why is there not an UNCUT American (R1) DVD?

I wonder, especially with the all the old filth getting a royal treatment. But if anyone is interested, check out (search for) these sites: Video Screams, Video Mayhem, RustedRare. They all offer good to decent UNCUT prints. Hey, Anchor Bay can't steal all these old bootleggers thunder now can they?

reply

Apparently, some guy has the rights but decided not to do anything with them but he won't sell, just wait for his contract to expire

reply

[deleted]

that is correct. The owner of the now out of business Program Power has the rights and won't give them up. Give me a break. What the hell is he going to do with it? Why not sell it to a company like Blue Underground, Unearthed, Synapse or Anchor Bay?

reply

i agree wiht silentnight29 god dam *beep* wont give up the rights makes me very mad this movie needs a SE dvd Releasei think whos wiht me?.....And i think it sould go wiht either Blue-Underground or Anchor Baay cuase i love those companys.

reply

I'm with you! This film deserves a proper uncut release. One of my favourite slashers.

reply

[deleted]

anchor bay dosent exsist any more, so shriek show or blue undergroung.

reply

Anchor Bay is now Starz, they still release cult movies.

reply

[deleted]

If someone's already answered this sorry, but apparantly code red dvd plans on releasing the film next year. With extras. Including commentary, check out there website for more updates as they come in.

reply

Yes I've heard this, but I'll believe it when I see it for pre-order, I do hope it's not just wishful thinking.

reply

It's out April 2008.

reply

No release date has been set for Nightmare. The April releases from Code Red are Sole Survivor and Boardinghouse.

reply

Code Red's future line-up is utterly mouthwatering, I've yet to take the plunge with one of their releases, but that's about to change as I've pre-ordered Sole Survivor. Hope we don't have to wait too much longer for Nightmare.

reply

The PRESIDENT of Code Red said in an interview on deadpit.com that he's having trouble getting proper film elements for a quality tranfer of the movie.
So they have to do digital clean-up which isn't cheap. So keep checking the Code Red website. But it's still going to be a while.

reply

Yeah, we've heard that before. The same thing also applies to The Nesting, Silent Scream, The Redeemer, and so forth...

reply

If it's going to be released this year then Halloween looks like the best opening, fingers crossed it sells loads and makes Code Red some much needed funds for their other prospective releases.

reply

How about why isn't there an American DVD of this film period?!

reply

Next year is Nightmares 30th anniversary so it must be on Code Red's books for 2011 which would make for some smart marketing. I'll wait for as long as it takes to see it looking as good as it ever will, all things considered.

reply

Nightmare Should Hit Dvd This Year Though. Early Spring I Hope.
Or Halloween

reply

[deleted]

What have you heard? Code Red DVD have the film in their catalogue and as they are a one man outfit you'll just have to wait a bit longer, but seeing as Nightmare, is to my knowledge, the very last super gore movie of the early 1980's yet to get a DVD release; then the wait will be worth it.

reply

[deleted]

BlueUnderground Should Release NIGHTMARE They Are Known For Relesing Gory & Violent Horror Films MANIAC , THE PROWLER Etc.

reply

Code Red has the film, but they have had problems with the director who is threatening to disown their prospective DVD release unless a certain scene is inserted into the movie twice, as he originally intended. Presumably Code Red would not be able to use any interview material they may or may not have if Scavolini refuses to endorse their release. Until Code Red confirm they are no longer putting the film out on DVD which so far they have not, I'm happy to wait for what will be the best the film is ever going to look like. As I stated in my previous post, next year: 2011 will be the 30th anniversary of the picture which would offer a more marketable promotion for what is an obscure horror movie likely only to appeal to people who remember it from back in the days of video cassette or 42nd street cinema.

reply

Gee, Political-Terror, that's not what I've heard from Scavolini. Nice rumor mill you've got going there. As for the 30th Anniversary, I (along with David DeCoteau) moderated the commentary track with Baird Stafford and Cleve Hall during which they both stated that the film was shot in 1980 AND Scavolini's original screenplay -- titled DARK GAMES -- bears a 1980 copyright. So technically 2010 is the 30th Anniversary. As for re-inserting a scene, please do tell. It'll definitely be news to Scavolini who told Code Red that he lost final cut of the film to the producers, after which point Robert T. Megginson (the film's credited editor) shot New York footage and then did a final cut. Scavolini has told Code Red that he is happy with the end result as cut by Megginson. That end result is the version that played theatrically in the UNITED STATES.

By the way, NIGHTMARE is the proper title of the film; NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN was the title applied to the film in Great Britain. So why apply a British title to an American film (albeit one with an Italian director at the helm)? Of course, if you really want to get technical, the original title was DARK GAMES. Baird loaned me his copy of the script bearing this title (which, at 167 pages, is actually an entirely different story than what ended up being shot). Baird also still has his production tee-shirt which had been printed up with that same shooting title of the script; DARK GAMES.

I hope this is helpful. And to those of you awaiting the DVD, Code Red deeply appreciates your patience. As previously noted, the camera negatives turned out to be unusable. I personally am not in charge of this release as I only work with Code Red (not for them) on this and other releases as a DVD moderator (in addition to participating in the on-camera interview with Baird and prepping interview questions for the on-camera interview with Scavolini). The delay has been frustrating for me as well, but as anticipation exploded, there was a desire on Code Red's part to get it right by releasing the cleanest version possible. More and more release prints were sorted through (three of which were telecined) for their overall merit. Unfortunately, the search for the perfect release print of NIGHTMARE has proven to be something like the search for Bigfoot. That said, it will be released this year.

reply

Interesting- LChrist276 and which moderator are you? All information I posted up came direct from Code Red's own blog site, so pull the other one it's got bells on it "I don't work for Code Red only with them" yeah right that's why you refute what was posted on their blog regarding the opening head in tray of gore dream shot which according to the blog I read insisted that the director was demanding be inserted into the DVD release twice as he had originally intended. As for referring to the film under its British title, well why not? It sounds so much more dramatic and fitting of its notorious video-nasty reputation, another great marketing prospect for the savvy. Whoever you are LChrist276 try being a little more conciliatory in your response to what was a genuine fan post. I'm not making the kind of claims you are, as a mouthpiece for Code Red I'm just a fan of the film and the label who would very much like to know a release date. No mention of your assured 2010 availability on Code Red's blog here is the address so you can take a look for yourself- http://codereddvdblog.blogspot.com/

reply

LChrist276 does indeed work for Code Red. I assure you.

reply

I can also back this up. LChrist276 works for Code Red. 100% sure of it.

reply

So why does he not read their blog site which is what I was quoting? I'm a Code Red fan and a big fan of Nightmares, no axe to grind, just shocked by such a snooty response.

reply

You misread the CR blog, pt. Scavolini was merely stating that the repeated scene of the severed head was NOT an editing error, but a choice in the editing process that he stuck with. The Code Red print already had that scene intact and the company had no plans to change it. Scavolini went on to address the rumors of an even longer Australian cut, repudiating any longer cut as not being truly definitive. He states that the CR cut is definitive. His annoyance was not with Code Red, but those who were calling for a different cut of the film.

reply

Not much of a revelation there, I'm afraid, since he's used his name--Lee Christian--on the IMDB several times. It's not as if he hides that he's associated with Code Red.

reply

Hey Delicreep So Do You Know If NIGHTMARE Is Officially Coming Out On Dvd This Year. I Read One Of The Previous Comments And It Said It Will Be Released This Year!!

reply

According to a post over at AVManiacs it should indeed come out this year. The hour-long interview with the director might or might not get included, depending on whether they manage to get it translated in time (time not really being so much of an issue as the money). Right now it looks like we probably will get a no-frills issue first, and then maybe (and that's a BIG maybe) a Special Edition later.

Frankly, it looks like this project has been sort of a nightmare (ho-ho) for CR. The negative was unusable, and so far they have only been able to track down three existing prints, all with different kind of flaws. The DVD should be a composite of these three prints.

reply

It Should Be A 30th Anniversary Edition Of NIGHTMARE Being Released , BUTCHER BAKER NIGHTMARE MAKER , THE VISITOR , & MADMAN Should All Be Released On Dvd This Year. Going To Be A Great Halloween For Classic Horror Flicks Hitting DVD.

reply

Marc Heuck, who has worked with Code Red, had this to say about NIGHTMARE:

"In a terrible example of life imitating art, NIGHTMARE is turning into a nightmare.

The negative is unusuable. When the lab attempted to inspect it, it was stuck together and could not be separated or salvaged.

The master has been sourced from six different prints, and is still probably going to inspire some troutmouth to complain that their Venezuelan bootleg had better picture quality.

Two different translators were hired to translate and subtitle Scavolini's 90 minute interview, which was conducted in Italian despite the fact that both he and his interviewer spoke perfectly good English. (???) One never did the work, the other chose to "condense" his replies in such a fashion that it looked like one of those foreign film gags in a TV sketch comedy; for example, when asked about how he got on with somebody, Scavolini speaks and gestures for almost a minute, yet all that appears underneath is "We got along well."

So much money has been spent on preparing the disc and supplements already, and taking into account the poor sales of Code Red releases in general, that NIGHTMARE will have to outsell every previous Code Red release combined...let me repeat that, combined...just to break even.

Again, this is a no-win situation. If CR cuts their losses and puts out the movie as is, with no supplements, the haters start bitching that their favorite movie wasn't given the special edition treatment it was promised. If they continue to try salvaging the Scavolini interview, it means the disc is delayed still, and the haters start bitching that CR is putting out crap that deserves to fail instead of what they want right here right now. And in either situation, they will never make their investment back.

So who needs a drink right now?"

reply

Thanks for the info! I haven't checked this post in months and when i come back to it, it was updated within the last hour. My skin must have been crawling.

Regardless of what is on this disc I will be buying a copy when released.

Release it on Bluray and I will buy 5 :D

Code Red just updated their blog with a mention about this movie & its pretty long & thorough.

reply

I wonder what cover art they will go with? Perhaps the original one sheet poster or better the U.K poster which is more creepy. I think the U.K title is one of the most enigmatic ever given to a horror film.

reply

I Emailed Code Red About The Dvd Cover There Using The U.S Theatrical Poster

reply

Well done Code Red! You just missed out on a 30 year anniversary release. Considering the company is winding up next year will Nightmares ever get released? The Code Red web site has vanished along with their blog pages. Does anyone know more....?

I Dont Think NIGHTMARE Will Ever Get A Dvd Release Not Through Codered

I Guess Its Bootleg Time Or VHS.

reply

Hey Mortuorum Maybe Synapse Films Or Blue Underground Will Release NIGHTMARE.
I Knew Codered Had Know Intensions Of Releasing NIGHTMARE.
They Are Such A B S Company Synapse Films Rules!!!!!!!!!

reply

What U.K. poster art are you talking about?
I'm not really a big fan of the poster that's displayed on a couple of review sites (www.Hysteria-Lives.co.uk among others) - although I agree about the title used.

Nightmares in a Damaged Brain would be a great choice for a new kind of expensive dvd-package with newly comissioned artwork, something along the lines of the Shameless/Arrow Video style collections! This flick with four optional cover artworks would be an awesome treat.

I already own this movie uncut as Blood Splash though, and am curious to how the Code Red DVD package will end up!

I got mine today and it's a nice set but I was surprised to find that disc 2 is a DVD-R albeit with a Code Red stamp and "Nightmare Disc 2" written on the disc in thick black marker pen!

Here's the details of what's on offer word for word from the back cover.

Disc 1:
-- Bonus 2008 Hi-Def master (1.78:1 (16x9) created from the two best 35mm prints
-- Audio commentary with make-up artist Cleve Hall and star Baird Stafford
-- Full frame color corrected telecine (2005) approved by Romano Scavolini.
-- "Making of a Nightmare" interview with Baird Stafford, Cleve Hall, and ex-distributor Tom Ward
-- "New York Nightmare" interview with New York special effect make-up Edward French

Disc 2:
-- Brand new 2011 telecine 1.78:1 (16x9) from a recently discovered slightly better 35mm print.
-- Uncensored 95min Italian interview from Romano Scavolini in Italian language
-- 2 different NIGHTMARE trailers
-- CODE RED trailers

reply

So, I'm assuming you just saw pictures of the set because Disc 2 is fashioned to look like a DVD-R but it is not.

I'll have a YouTube review uploaded soon on this disc.

reply

You assume wrong, I got my Nightmare DVD same day as my original post. Sometimes film labels send retailers discs early before the street date.

reply

also, the title of disc 2 was not drawn on with a marker pen. it looks like it, but if you look very closely you'll notice that the writing was actually printed onto the disc. i'm not exactly sure why they went for that look for that disc.

reply

I think as someone else on these boards has pointed out, this film is probably one of the most bootlegged of all time and Code Red are having a joke with that.
