The ending- SPOILERS Naturally

When I saw this film on video a long time ago, I was struck the ending. Either a voice-over or written epilogue ( I can't remember) stated:
SPOILER..............................................................................................................................................................

Jimmy McNichol's character was found not guilty by temporary insanity.
I would have thought he was defending himself against the Sheriff's vicious attack on him. Wouldn't it have been acceptable to say all charges were dropped against him, or being found not guilty by self-defense?

Well the only witness to the Sheriff attacking him was the gay coach, and this was a town where gay people were seen as "sickos" so... I guess it was kind of realistic.

It makes it appear like it was a true story, which I don't think it was. Just a cheap wrap up and a cop-out also. It would have been more daring, if the homophobic cop, was 'actually' homosexual and he found Billy dazed out on the spiked milk, after he has just killed Aunt Cheryl. He attempts to molest him, just as the 'gay' coach comes in and catches him. A fight ensues and the cop then gets pumped full of lead by Billy's girlfriend, who just happens to come barging in and see the homophobic cop beating up the coach and Billy. Billy then confesses to the coach and his girlfriend, that he thinks that he might be gay—he didn't have an issue with the coach, even after he found out his secret.

That way, Billy and the coach are innocent and the girlfriend killed the cop in self-defense and no need for a stupid denouement, about Billy being acquitted, due to temporary insanity. The film could have also ended, with the announcement that Cheryl was actually his mother and not his aunt, as the film revealed earlier. Lets not forget the typical 'slasher\horror' movie ending, of the disturbed Aunt Cheryl, coming back to life and attempting to attack Billy again, just as the other cop comes in and shoots her in the head. 😅
