Why a Kukri?

A Kukri is a very unusual weapon, I don't know why a Kukri would be good for decapitations? especially for this film. Did the director choose the Kukri as a weapon? or is this a thing where someone gets an idea and later puts it up in the later future? like how in Halo: Reach, Emile has a Kukri for a weapon.

Looking it up in Wikipedia, it is said to go back some time and is used in South Asia cultures. For instance:

"Other researchers give it a much longer history tracing back to the domestic sickle and the prehistoric bent stick used for hunting and later in hand-to-hand combat."

That would fit the "this has been done for thousands of years" sentiment of the killer.

Kukris - albeit mostly larger ones - are used in ritualistic slaughter of animals, so yes, they are great at chopping off heads.
