Is this the most un-Disney Disney film?

Before I saw it I thought it's story didn't seem very Disney like but having watched it I can't think of another Disney film made before or since that's as serious a drama as this is. Based on a true story it's told in a no fuss non cute way that get very suspenseful at the end when you know prison or even death is just round the corner. It's a great film but just wondering can anyone think of a more serious film made by Disney.

This was shortly before Disney formed "Touchstone" to handle their less-mousey endeavors. This excellent film would surely have been released under that name.

I'd say that Never Cry Wolf and The Girl who Spelled Freedom are pretty competitive with Night Crossing in the "most serious Disney film" category. (Never Cry Wolf also has the dubious distinction of being the only film released under Disney's brand to feature adult male full frontal nudity, as far as I'm aware.)

This was right around the time when Disney went through a massive change of the guard internally. Disney took on a number of more mature movies and were hammered by it via mail in campaigns etc.

This really was a departure for the typical Disney flick and it is really good.
