Just watched this movie and liked it, but the subplot about the son was puzzling. Why did he put red hose over his head, pierce his ear, take the pills, etc? And why was he watching his mom secretly in that weird get-up? Im assuming he was 'crazy' like the killer dad... Was he in on it, perhaps?

The red stocking on his face and the pills always confused me. The movie never touched on that for some reason.

shareI think we're supposed to believe that this is a set up for him to take over for his father at the end. We're supposed to think that they were both sick and co-dependent, so when the father dies, the kid is a believable replacement. We would never have believed that Derek would have taken over for his father if we hadn't been shown that he was already crazy.
