Way too confusing

This movie felt like it was entirely built around random jokes like the car going into the swamp and the house burning down, with the plot added later on as whatever they could think up to connect the jokes.

I just watched this for the first time, and I still have absolutely no clue what went on. The characters made no sense and I have no clue what their personalities were supposed to be. Is there a legitimate plot to this movie, or is it as much of a mess as I saw it as?
