Good film but very tame......

Just seen the uncut french dvd , i enjoyed this film but was surprised at how tame it is , i expected far more gruesome and bloody deaths for all of her victims. With films out there on general release uncut like Irreversible i cant believe this is still censored in the US and the UK !!

reply

Hm. Does it really matter? Honestly...

reply

Hmm...If you're thinking of buying it expecting to be shocked - yes it matters, if you're a fan of abel ferrera - yes it matters...So in answer to your question, yes it really does matter......honestly.......

It WAS censored in the UK by the BBFC by 1:42s for the 1986 warner video, these cuts still remain. Maybe in the U.S the cuts were as a result of pre-cuts by the distributor due to objections by the MPAA ? I dont know the answer to that question as i'm from the UK. Either way it is common knowledge that the US version is cut. The only way to see it uncut is to watch the french release (which I own).

I think the real horror of the film comes from the inhumane behavior and attitudes of most secondary characters, and Thana's mental deterioration and the ordeal she has to go through. Not from the violence itself.

This stuff is tame today...even in 1981 I can think of many films that are way more graphic/brutal/inhumane than this.

Still, not a bad exploitation film, and certainly memorable. I'd take the original I Spit on Your Grave over it for a rape/revenge classic, though

Over time, memory can either amplify or minimize the actual level of grotesque brutality in a film (if such a measurement could even reliably exist) but I think I agree. The New York Ripper from around the same time is much more disgusting, if memory serves. However, Ms.45 has a emotional element that is missing from some of the more inhumane exploitation movies. Zoe Tamerlis' performance is very moving, at times she reminded of me Meiko Kaji in the Female Prisoner Scorpion films.

reply

I think it seems more explicit than it is because of the tone. The cruelty shown towards Thana, and the casual, glorified manner she goes about murdering men.

reply

I think the film was deemed brutal at the time but looks tame in comparison today, although this film is not as bad or explicit as the exploitation films made in the early 80s.

Its that man again!!
