The scene when he's in his kitchen and says he "needs some E" to pick him up. My mind immediately thought of ecstacy. But then he reaches into his cabinet and pulls out a big jar of Vitamin E.

Was this an intentional joke? Or did the slang "E" for ecstacy not even exist in 1981?

I'm guessing he meant the vitamin. I just looked up XTC and it said MDMA has been around since the 60s and and 70 s but wasn't popular till the late 80s so I don't think they called it E in 1980.
