The Russell film indeed misses the boat on a lot of levels. You don't even get some of the basic stories of the team like the relationship between Jim Craig and his father, or Mike Eruzione's vow to never play again after the Olympics. They couldn't even find a bearded actor to play Ken Morrow, and they also seemed more determined to rehabilitate Jimmy Carter's insipid "malaise" speech rather than focus on the true reason for why the success of this team struck a chord with Americans, which was giving America something to make them feel proud about when it came to their country during a time when America had bottomed out in the Cold War era with the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
"Miracle On Ice" might have been a quick by-the-numbers "instant history" telling with an actor 30 years too old to be Herb Brooks, but it captures the true essence of the story a lot more. Plus, they also filmed scenes at the proper locations to give it greater authenticity. I watch "Miracle On Ice" and I believe in what I'm seeing. I watch "The Miracle" and I feel like I'm watching something fake on all levels.
