What was the killer planning to do with the jigsaw body?

Other than castrating campus studs?

Basically, he was trying to "recreate" his mother.

Near the film's beginning, we see the killer going through a box of items including a photo of his mother, her bloody dress, etc. (In the Spanish language version, we hear a voice-over of a child during this scene saying things like, "Mom, why did you leave me?...Come back!".).

In his twisted mind, he apparently thought that if he obtained the right body parts that would fit his mother's clothing and put them all together, then he could somehow bring her back to life.

Recall toward the end of the movie, the killer discovers that the feet (which he got from the girl he cut in half in the locker room) do not fit his mother's shoes.

That's why he then drugs and attempts to kill Mary Riggs. He needed her legs/feet to complete his "puzzle"!

Hope this helps.

Thanks, and have a great day.

Not to sound sick and twisted, but I always thought that the killer was into necrophilia and was doing sexual things to the body itself. Although grandsammer's theory sounds like it would make sense too.

But these two theories put together.... well, you get the idea :)

I am not aware of any indication in the film that the killer was a necrophiliac.

Is there any particular scene that you're thinking of?

Truth be told, I haven't seen the movie in it's entirety in almost 7 years. I just kept thinking about that particular scene after I found it on Youtube a few weeks ago. The scene has since then been taken down, but I found the whole film on Youtube a little while ago, so I just might re-watch it.

I always assumed he was sick and twisted, and wanted to recreate the woman he lusted for in the puzzle.

But I understand the mother theory. The copy I own is a VHS transfer in a cheap DVD box set, so I will assume it's the cut version, so I don't know if they expanded on the idea.

See if you can find the 1984 Vestron Video release of 'PIECES'. It's uncut. That early 1990s video release on 'T-Z Video' (a subsidiary of 'EDDE Entertainment', I believe) is missing the opening sequence before the credits start.

If you're going to own any version of PIECES may as well get the original Vestron release!

it's on DVD. no need to buy a crappy VHS tape.

The Vestron tape is infinitely more fun to own. However, I will not stop you from buying the DVD if you so choose.

it was almost forty years since he killed his mother. I don't know why but I think you were supposed to assume this wasn't the first time he did it. In which case, he just got rid of them and then repeats himself again in a couple years.

It's a while since I've seen it but isn't there an accident with possibly glass at the start although I think some footage got missing to confuse things.

From what i remember it is something at the start, an accident that causes the killer to kill again. Maybe this means the killer had forgotten or locked that part away and the accident triggered his memories
