Great film

Mike Leigh is incredible. Good early roles for Tim Roth and Gary Oldman, and Phil Daniels is great as usual. Wonderfully written with great characters and a great cast. It's a shame this movie isn't more widely known.

I agree, Leigh's films are a delight - so realistic and so dry. Meantime needs to be seen by more people as do most of his films.

so good to hear others like it too.
i'm not sure what it is about this film that makes it my number 1 probably.
of course there's the great great acting, which you get in all of Leighs films.
and great script too.
but i think that there's this mystical quality to the setting.
the mundane suburbia, the tower blocks...and that incredible pause on Tim Roth in the last scene, his parents and brother arguing in the kitchen while the sun glows through his bedroom window.
i really dont know what makes it, but there's so much i get from Leighs films that i find nearly impossible to explain, or even grasp.

IMDb's year should say 1983, not 1984. My favourite Leigh film, and one of Roth's best performances ever, he's truly amazing and complicated here. It almost seems effortless, but I'm sure it was a very difficult role.

If you like clear spoon fed plots. Plots with neon lights shining over them, then you really should avoid Mike Leigh films. I loved this film because it was a great portrayal of London in the mid 80's and to a certain extent, is still more than relevant now.

Admitedly, there some in jokes with regards to life on a council estate, at the time. Like when Frank goes down to the report his window broken. The chap they send up to look at it is priceless (the worst sort of philosophising middle class liberal) and I was cracking up at the bit when they they asked him when someone would be coming around to fix it (Soon. Very Soon. Tonight, tomorrow....who knows?). That is exactly what it was like.

The stuff with Auntie Barbara should not be overlooked either. They had there nice house out in Chigwell but right at the end, you find out that all is not well with them either. And why was that?.

For me, this was anything but boring.

reply

I think the film was made in 1983 but released in 84 on British television.

Barbara, for me was the star of this piece of art. A very subtle depression & loneliness was lurking underneath that confident exterior, not forgetting she also had the funniest lines!

'I don't much care for your boss & his fat wife either..'

There is no help but self help...

Oh, wouldn't you give it another chance? :)
I'll say quite a lot of things did happen. Turning points? Just first thing that comes to my mind "I'm a painter and decorator!" It touches, it makes you laugh... Fantastic film!

Nothing happened?

Life happened, but apparently that's not enough for some people...

I am a big Mike Leigh fan, but I do not see Meantime as one of his best. Certainly it is a brilliant portrayal of working class attitudes and living conditions prevalent then (I left England in 1978) and with his movies I feel almost like an intruder spying on these people in their living room. Such brilliant acting. But their was no allieviating good things happening to the protaganists in this movie to lighten the overall grimness and hopelessness of the mood, so it came over as depressing. I did not get this movie so was interested to see what others made of it. Part of my problem may be that I miss a lot of the dialogue. Barbara was about the only sympathetic character in the movie, perhaps Hayley, but I could not understand her role. Was she Coxie's sister?
A good documentary of a living hell.

I was disapointed as well. When the credits appeared suddenly at the end, I said "Are you kidding me?" I don't have a problem with movies or stories being free to interpretation but this movie was so vague. I could not for the life of me, figure out what the heart of the story was. And the characters? They are almost completely flat up until the end. Collin is supposed to be a sympathetic character but OMFG!!! I just couldn't find it in me to care about him.

I found him a sympathetic character, but I didn't get it at the end.

SPOILER!

Did he become a skinhead like Coxy, or did he just shave his head because he wanted to make a decision for himself?

I think it was a combination of looking up to his brother and at the same time proving his independence. It was sad and pathetic but ultimately liberating as it brought him closer to his brother and acknowledged his independence from his parents.

Ahhh, I see.

The only thing i wish could have happened is that hayley and colin got together.I think the rest of the film was fine.Mind you,the way the characters were shown was probably more realistic. You dont always end up with the person you like.

I live in England, and i can tell you for sure that this is what life here is really like for some people.

reply

I think life is like that for most poor people in any country.

reply

You're right. I'm Australian and grew up in a poor suburb in housing commission accommodation. It's very similar to how it's depicted in this film. My family had 5 children, 2 parents living in a tiny dog box. The scene where they're bickering over use of the toilet brought back some lovely memories!

Brilliant film full of wonderful, heartfelt performances. Tim and Phil give sterling performances as the two brothers who are trapped in the cycle of unemployment. Gary Oldman is also good as the obnoxious, rude skinhead Coxy. I think this might have been Tim's second film performance but already he shows what a tremendous talent he has. I grew up in a working class area in Virginia and even though I live in a different country there are similarities between the working class in both areas. I grew up with a few young men who were mentally disabled/socially inept and Tim hit the nail squarely on the head. If you're a fan of Tim Roth or Gary Oldman this shouldn't be missed.

I saw this film as a 13 year old the first time it was broadcast. have watched it various time since and always rings true. Its exactly the environment I came from and that my folks still live in. Im watching it gain now. So watchable.

I once met Tim Roth in paris, circa 2002 in a bar and was drunk enough to do my colin impression for him...

Hi, not spamming but I want to let everyone know about a charity auction I have coming up. Mike Leigh has very generously donated, and signed, a boxset of 10 of his films. Including Meantime, Naked, Vera Drake and his first film, Bleak Moments.

It's a huge coup and will be a great win for a fan!

The auction will start on the 30th of November, details and a link to the ebay page are here http://www.helenscharityauctions.org/

"I was waiting for something to happen"

That's the whole point, nothing happens when you're strggling lower class in Thatcher's Britain and there's not much you can do about it...

I Just wanted to express a stupid point on my part: I just love Gary Oldman in almost any thing he dose. Even the Harry Potter movies which I didn't like but LOVED both his, as well as Alan Rickman's performances!
