Why in the Blue Hell does Humungous
Take the tanker on like that at the end? It makes no sense at all. He still had men and Wez was still on the truck too.

shareSlope. Humungous couldn't see the truck and wes.
shareWhat Alex said. He didn't see it in time and wasn't expecting it to be coming back at him.
Even if he had seen it earlier, brakes and handling did not look like his vehicle's forte.
...then whoa, differences...
The real question is why are there suddenly a bunch of vehicles parked on the sides of the road during that crash. =P

First, they had more of a chance to stop as opposed to Humungous. They got out of Max's way. Second, after seeing that the tanker was loaded with sand instead of gasoline (petrol), they just took off. Especially after their leaders died.
If you watch the final sequence again, Humungus gets hit with a molotov and pulls over. Further down the road, Max unexpectedly turns the rig around. Humungus takes off and hits the nitro to catch up, comes over the hill and finds himself face-to-face with the truck. --cue massive crash--
"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"
Was a huge debate on this a few years back, majority of people thinking that the big man was caught un aware but in my book Humungous is committing suicide, that poxy tanker has wiped out the best part of his gang and he was stopping it no matter what. He has plenty of time to veer out of the way, he's just navigated a corner so 4-5 seconds doesn't require that reactions of a cat. We even cut to a shot of him looking grimly determined as opposed to "oh sheite" pre crash. As for his stationary gang looking on, guess the filmmakers thought no one would notice.
shareI really really really highly doubt an insane egomaniac of his caliber was going to commit suicide over that.
shareSince the first time I saw this masterpiece (I was 11 years old) I understood that Humungus was 1 - driving too fast , 2 - couldn´t see very well, 3 - was not aware that the damn truck was coming his way.
I don´t think he could avoid it.
He wanted to ride shiny and chrome into the gates of Valhalla
sharejust watched that part. The guy couldn't see because he was coming up the sloop where as mad max was able to see him. a use he was going down the slope. The others stopped when they saw sand pouring out from the rig

If I'm remembering the scene properly, Humungus has just activated some kind of nitro boost on his vehicle and accelerated to a ridiculous speed to catch up with the tanker. Meanwhile, Max has been forced to turn the tanker around and go back the way he came. Humungus is going too fast to maneuver or stop, and isn't expecting the tanker to be coming towards him, so... yeah. Boom.
shareThis^
shareNot having it. Max and the Feral Kid get eyes on an incoming Humungus and vice versa, Max pulls in the Kid to the Mack cab, Wez has time enough to deduct something wicked his way comes and turn around, we then get a shot of the Humungus grimly focused on the job in hand, he doesn't look like someones whos about to get mushed, we'd have got a bulging eyeball scene if that was the case.
shareWell, yeah, but neither of them could stop. Max has time to drag Feral into the cab, but doesn't seem to have time to brake or turn (and he wasn't going anywhere near as fast as Humungus). And all Wez can do is hang there screaming instead of trying to jump clear or climb over the cab to (relative) safety.
Of course, it's possible Max just decided to play chicken with Humungus, or committed himself to the collision as a means of taking out Humungus and Wez. And Humungus might have been willing to ram the tanker to finally stop it. They're both half-crazy post-apocalyptic road warriors, so thinking things through probably doesn't come naturally to either of them.
