Is it ever stated who the Humungus was?

Has the identity of the Humungus ever been revealed? If not, does anyone have a guess?

reply

Thankfully not.

reply

If anyone mentions Goose I'm comin round with a baseball bat. Recall Miller mentioning something about Humungus coming from a military background, that's about it.

reply

He's the ruler of the wasteland.

reply

Thats all you need to know.

reply

i believe the terms 'vermin' and 'trash' are thrown around in reference to him.

reply

The Lord Humumgus
The Warrior of the Waste Land
The Ayatollah of Rock & Rollah

reply

No, he's the Ayatollah of Rock 'n Rolla.

reply

Lol made me laugh. Never heard that theory raised before, but you would be correct to give anyone seriously proposing it a good tenderising.

reply

Get your bat ready:
1) - Humungus is burn-scarred
2) - Goose, although severely burned, did not die in Mad Max
3) - When Humungus runs back into his tent, he grabs a POLICE REVOLVER, which he loads in front of a photo of motorcycle cops, one of whom looks a lot like Max.
4) - when he runs back outside to shoot at the semi, he hesitates and mutters "MAX!" before opening fire.

reply

3) - ...which he loads in front of a photo of motorcycle cops, one of whom looks a lot like Max.

No.

reply

Are 3 and 4 actually correct?

It's been a few years since I watched TRW, but doesn't he saying something like, "he slipped by me. It can't be." Before opening fire?

reply

He doesn't say anything before firing at the truck, and doesn't go inside a tent either. The only photo is of that military couple, although I always thought that was a brilliant shot. In one moment it gives him more character development than some baddies get throughout an entire film

reply

What? In this scene? No he doesn't...

1) Goose was badly burned over his entire body and needed an oxygen tent just to stay alive. It was implied in "Mad Max" that he was as good as dead--so how and why would he go from a scrawny corpse to a badass Arnold Schwarzenegger-ruler of a bunch of psychopaths in the wasteland?

2) You're an idiot.

"Beethoven had his critics too, Keith. See if you can name three of 'em."

reply

1) Humungus does not have burned hands, as Goose did.
2) Goose was slight, not "Humungus"
3) He doesn't go into a tent. That is not a police revolver. Those are not motorcycle cops, it is a couple.
4) No, he doesn't

0/0...Stay after class! lol

Originally, one idea was that he was Goose (Max's partner from the first movie) which would explain the mask and burn marks.

As it is, he's just some military man who formed a gang in the post-apocalypse world for survival.

Cept Goose was literally half a man and had full body burns. Humungous just has a deformed face.

reply

That's what I mean. Goose was one of the choices for Humungus when they were stil writing the film, so I'm assuming that Goose-Humungus would've looked different and had more than a mask.

When they decided against that, they just made him a guy with facial radiation scars wearing a mask.

Ah. I never heard that they had considered making Goose the Humungous. That's interesting.

I do remember reading the original intention was to have Wez eventually kill Humungous and take over the gang before the final chase. You can still see elements of that throughout the finished movie.

Interesting thinking about what could have been in both cases.

reply

That would have sucked! Humungous is the man! How could Wes have killed him, stab him in the back? Where was this hinted at in the movie?

Never heard how it would happen or at what point during production is was changed; only that it was intended.

As for hints, there's only small elements that remain: When Max is looking through the binoculars you can see Wez being totally flippant toward Humungous over something and telling him to f-off before riding away.

Wez, despite being in a fit of rage over the Golden Youth's death, is totally defiant toward Humungous' orders and just wants to forgo the plan and attack head on. Even going so far as trying to commandeer Humungous' vehicle which forces Humungous to choke him out(This could also have led to Wez having a resentment toward Humungous for denying him revenge when he wanted it most).

When Max makes a run for it, Wez straight out jacks Humungous' ride, leaving the boss behind. Not exactly something one who respects their leader would do. (This also pisses off Humungous as Wez is in chains the next time we see him.) Etc...

Lots of small stuff like that.

All that works perfectly in context of the current movie, so one wouldn't think much of them, but upon learning about the prior plan, scenes like that suddenly become threads that would give reason for Wez to decide he can get the job done better and usurp Humungous command(Wez is shown to be the headstrong type that might do something like that too).

I'm glad the movie ended up the way it did though.

reply

Glad that didn't happen thanks though for the reply, very interesting.

Goose would have had to have been the $6 billion man to come back from his fate in the first movie.

It might have been interesting had he been Goose. I watched both films recently, and it's very unlikely, but it might have made a great dramatic moment. A good opportunity would have been after Max tried to escape and his dog was killed, and have the Humungus confront the wounded Max, and unmask himself.

I think he was Paul Hogan's first uncredited film role.

I'm not sure I totally get the question. Who would/should he have been? If it said he was a professional body builder, grocery store clerk, or something else, what difference would that have made?

Before the apocalypse, he was probably a personal trainer or something

Maybe. He certainly doesn't have any issues finding boatloads of protein in the post-apocalypse. I assume cannibalism.

Obviously it was Johnny the Boy. He chose the chain, hence didn't get away without some burns, then immediately began working out.

He also consciously changed his persona from 'Weedy Bogan Deadsh#t' to 'Germanic Badass'

reply

If Humungus was burned over more of his body, I think it's at least a worthy conversation, but being as he is not, I don't see how it's Johnny.

Yeah let's face it, if Humungus was supposed to be anyone from part 1, we'd know by now. The movie doesn't hint at him being anyone and none of the related media, scripts or whatever hint at him being anyone from part 1 either.

It's all just fun fan theory.

reply

righto then

Brilliant. Absolutely brillant.

One of those wikia articles did a good write up on Humungus. Their speculation that he was in or around a nuked Aussie city is the best for me.
