Hello, Buzz! I hope your year is going well.
To clarify: I was speaking of the fictional/satirical network EmpTV as portrayed in this film, not the real network MTV.
I'm actually of two minds on MTV, which changed music for better in some ways and worse for others. It helped innovative artists such as Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Prince and Talking Heads further refine their craft, but it also fell victim to the hype machine of Madonna, Michael Jackson and Duran Duran. It provided a career boost and new audience for '70s stalwarts Hall & Oates, Rick Springfield and ZZ Top, but it also often focused on strong visuals at the expense of good music. Then it abandoned rock 'n' roll entirely for ... well, whatever it considers "reality" these days.
More than MTV, I blame music fans for the decline rock 'n' roll. Those who worship "Idols" instead of innovators deserve what they get.
Keep on rockin' with your baddd self, Buzz!
