Why no drummer?

I watched this movie a while back because I'm a huge Sex Pistols fan, but I was just wondering why the Stains had no drummer? Why in the hell would you make a movie about a rock band, and not give them a drummer?

Was a drummer not in the budget? Their music sounds so weak without some kind of drumming.

"To emphasize that they're amateurs barely able to play, much less care about having a drummer."

Huh? No offense but that doesn't make any sense. I've seen a million amateur bands, many who couldn't play and they all had drummers. It's just absurd for a rock band to not have a drummer, or a drum machine, or something.

It just struck me as really dumb in the movie.

Two of the girls are sisters, the other is their cousin, It's likely they didn't find any friend that had a drum set and wanted to join. Also since Corinne was unemployed it would seem they could not afford a drum set (and Dern's mother did not seem like the person who'd buy her daughter or nieces something this loud and annoying as drums) They did say early in the film that they only had 3 rehearsals maybe they were originally planning to get a drummer later on.

because one more female character would probably have been too much. it's a movie.

"because one more female character would probably have been too much. it's a movie."

Yeah, lol. You can't have more than 3 females in a movie, I forgot.

And yeah, it is a movie.

i was saying for this specific movie.

Well, if one more female was too many "for this specific movie" why couldn't they have had a male drummer? Guys can play drums with girls.

I'm just saying, not having a drummer, for a rock band, is silly.

I play, and not having a drummer in the movie, to me, is like when you see a movie with a band concert scene and the band is obviously not actually playing. Like the drummer with be playing on the snare when the song has a roll. That kind of stuff.

A rock band without a drummer, or a drum machine or something, to provide a beat is like having a movie about football without having a QB. It's just silly.

you're being too technical. it doesn't really matter for the story that's being told. it's really about corrine and her journey.

Having no drummer is consistent with the plot. It shows how they were really in over their heads and had no concept of musicianship, just a concept of rebellion through fashion. Besides, they were all related to each other and probably didn't have any understanding of how to recruit a drummer or hadn't yet gotten to the point where they thought they needed to recruit one. As the movie starts, they've only rehearsed 3 times. That's not enough time to realize how bad you sound without a drummer.

It is common with amateur bands for someone to change instruments out of necessity. But not having a drummer doesn't distract much from the plot.

If Corrine (Diane Lane) played guitar then Tracy (Marin Kanter) could have moved from guitar to drums. In the music video at the end there are some scenes with Corrine playing guitar. Diane Lane dated Jon Bon Jovi. Maybe he could have given her a few pointers on guitar, but I think they dated a couple years after this movie. Bon Jovi allegedly wrote "You Give Love A Bad Name" about Lane.

Whatever happened to Marin Kanter who played Tracy Burns? The other two Stains, Diane Lane and Laura Dern, went on to have long acting careers.

I think most punk bands had a guitar player, bass player, drummer and lead singer who didn't play an instrument. But Green Day became enormously popular as a trio with a singer/guitar player, bass player and drummer.

The Stains not having a drummer really wasn't a big deal.

I think things happened so fast for them that they did not really have time to put together a band properly. Im sure the next step the producers had in mind for them if their project had not backfired, would have been to flank them with professional musician and work on their musical style.
That' s what the film shows at the end, how the music business is, a trio of cute teenage girls without an ounce of talent but with good presence and a quirky look can go so much further than a real band of devoted talented musicians, like Ray Winston' s band. And this is true, just look at all the terrible boy bands and pop singers around...

It's not like they have a total lack of a percussion section; Corrine does play the tambourine. (Granted, that's not the same thing as a drummer at all, but it's at least something.)
