145 minutes?!

Ok there was some interesting ideas in this movie, but 145 minutes long?!

Christ, what was Romero thinking?

My theory is that Romero was afraid of Tom Savini and thought he would do something nasty if Romero wanted to cut some of the endless motorbikes scenes.

reply

"Motorbikes"? Okay, just get the Hell out.

Just kidding. Well, Romero does tend to make his movies a little long. I didn't mind; once I got drawn into the story, and started liking the characters, I was sorry to see it end. To be honest, it's one of my favorite movies, and I really don't know what I'd cut. Okay, I can think of a few short scenes here and there.

Now, "Pirates of the Caribbean" -- there's a movie that needs to be twenty minutes shorter.

I totally agree, this movie was one of the most pleasant surprises of the past few years for me.

did anyone else notice Martin Ferrero, the lawyer from Jurassic Park who gets eaten when he's taking a dump? classic, haha

reply

Also, Patricia Tallman, who plays Judy in "Knightriders", worked as a stuntwoman on "Jurassic Park", doubling (if I recall) for Laura Dern.

(Note: the lawyer, sadly, wasn't actually taking a dump; he'd just abandoned the children and hidden in a bathroom.)

"The truth 24 times a second."

reply

well, he should have been

reply

Come to think of it, whether I were in a bathroom or not, a T-Rex bearing down on me would probably precipitate a spontaneous dump.

"The truth 24 times a second."

reply

You bet Jurassic Park I noticed him. Evidently you seemed to have missed several years of Martin Ferrero as Izzy in Miami Vice.

I liked the fact that its a long movie. I think ALL good movies should be over 2hrs long. Hell i'd love it if lots of movies were 3hrs long! For real. Haven't u ever watched a movie that u really like and wen it was over u wished it could just go on and on? I find it sad sometimes wen a movie ends. Then there r some real stinkers that u just cant wait to b over lol. I just really love watching a nice long movie if its a good one. And i thought this movie was good and definately worth the long play time. ~~~~~~~~ April151CT

I first came across this movie when I was much younger and less patient, and it has NEVER seemed overlong to me

There's stuff that maybe could've been cut, but what's there does so much to humanize each of the characters and give us the sense that they're a "real" family with long-standing relations

I watched this movie as a very young child in the 80's and spent years trying to find its name so 145 minutes is not long enough...i just hope to see t soon!

I never noticed it being too long either. I think it
was necessary for the moods it tried to set. I remember
renting it 20 years later and being pissed that the
version I got had a lot of scenes cut to shorten it. I
found a full digital version and have that saved.

reply

Whenever i watch it, my feeling is that it's not long enough! I love these characters & want to spend more time with them.

Knightriders is one of those movies such as Dazed and Confused, or Romero's own Dawn that I wish had like some rare 3&1/2 hour work print sitting around somewhere. For me, I get so involved with the characters I just don't want the films to end.

It's only my opinion. Climb down.

reply

Yeah Romero was making epic-length films then.

"Martin", from 1977, was originally 2 hours and 45 minutes, but the distributor and investors made Romero trim it down to under 2 hours. Then, "Dawn" was well over 2 hours. Then, "Knightriders" was 2 hours and 25 minutes. Heck, even "Creepshow" was a little over 2 hours. He had originally envisioned "Day of the Dead" as quite the epic, with a lot of action taking place above ground before they ever get to the underground. But, there was no budget for it.
