james ryan martial artist?

was this actor a real martial artist or was he just an actor? He had a heck of a build on him to be just an actor.

Hi there savvybrog..you should check-out your other side of the family relative man. James Ryan is a south afrikan film Icon, actor extrodinare and I dont use the words loosely. Very well known back here in good ole SA.
In the USA, amongst some section of the karate 'scene,' to use the word loosely this time, he and his films are very well known. Really, the film "Kill and Kill Again" and its predissor;-"Kill Or Be Killed" are a very good example of traditional Shotokan JKA style as made famous by the great Master Gichin Funakoshi and taught by the equally famous South African karate Sensei's; Sensei Norman Robinson and Sensei Stan Schmidt, amongst an all-star Shotokan style karate greats. And yes, James Ryan was and is an actor of note but also holds a Honorary black belt; Shodan, 1st Dan, awarded him by the South African JKA (Japan Karate Asso.)- True he had no formal karate/martial arts training prior to the film, but was an accomplished, all-round athlete and champion ice scater to boot. He took to the fighting scenes chorographed very well by the two sensei's and produced by Igo Kantor, directed by Ivan Hall, with Director of Photography me; tai krige.
What a fun movie it was....especially shooting most of the so-called special effects seq's like:- " Bullet Time'....a type of Time-Slice application, but all thats another story......
James Ryan's contribution to the "Kill and Kill Again" movie was enormous, and his martial arts work is there for all to see...the script is dismal to say the least and the dialoque laughable, not to speak of the 'Beard'.....but the technical side of things were of a high standard. - tai krige sasc.

yeah, I remember this movie playing upon it's release in the old Oscar movie house in Sunnyside Pretoria.

It came out there the same week as CLASH OF THE TITANS I recall.

I no longer live in SA but in Holland a couple of years ago I had a pleasant surprise of seeing James Ryan in an ad campain for a tequila flavoured beer, obviously shot in SA. So James is still active to some extent.

Tai, so how come James didnt make any more karate films, etc cause I must say alot of us old guys got into karate cause of those two movies? and you mentioned ice skater...was he a olympic figure skater? and lastly thanks for explaining the bullet sequence...I can see where movies like the matrix took the idea and ran with it.

Hello savvybrog-1

Do you have a cousin named Shan? I read a post somewhere, from a guy named Shan, who said James Ryan was his father. Is that true?

You should be very proud of your Uncle. Apparently he has accomplished a lot in his life, and he is very much admired. Tai Krige wrote high praises about him on youtube and here.

I've been a Bruce Lee fan since I was 7 or 8 years old, but then after seeing KorBK and [email protected] in the early 80's, I could not take my eyes off James Ryan. He was incredible in so many ways. Cheesy lines and all, he carried the load for most of the other castmembers who could not act at all, and he made those movies work. And that had to take some real talent. The ice-skating explains his tremendous grace, too. What kind of skater was he? Figure? Speed? Are there any photos of him skating?

If he took only a 'crash course' in martial arts, it sure fooled everyone I knew. In fact, my brother and I think James Ryan was, for the most part, just as believable as Bruce Lee, and just as fit. But James was certainly a better actor. He had me believing he really was nuts in Kickboxer 5. haha

I had a huge crush on him when I was young, and apparently I still do. All that talent rolled up into a perfect package. I use to watch [email protected] so much that I memorized practically every word and every movement he made.

It has been a long time since I even thought about him. Just recently he crossed my mind, and the past few nights I have been looking around the internet to see what I could find. I found more than I thought I would, including comments and posts from Mr. Krige which were very interesting. I saw a recent photo of your Uncle holding a cigar, which someone posted from an actor site.

Are there movies other than what is listed here at imdb? Is there a website devoted to him anywhere? If not, I don't suppose you would want to make one. :)

If you have the time, I would love to hear more about him, his career in SA, his writing, etc. Is he still acting? Is he married? Grandchildren?

Is his health okay? You got me worried about him now. Does he need half my liver? A lung? A girlfriend who would totally adore him? I'm assuming he doesn't need a nursemaid yet, but keep me in mind for that, too. lol

Okay, I guess I'm done gushing over him now. It's very late. I'm getting punchy.
If he scribbles on a napkin at Christmas time, feel free to send it to me. :)

The internet has certainly made it a small world. This is fun. I never would have thought at age 50, I'd be typing to the nephew of an actor I had a crush on in my 20's. The youth of today have it made with all this technology. We were lucky to have two cans and a string, let alone computers.

You should be very proud of your Uncle. He deserves a lot of respect.
Oh, one other thing. Is this book he wrote to you published? I'd love to see it.

Thanks for letting me bend your ear. I really do care about your Uncle and I want to thank you for the information you posted here.

Sincerely,
Laura

P.S. - Had to edit this. I found some answers to a few of my questions.

Oh my gosh you are 50 years old? I was expecting to see at the end of this that you might be like 12 ??? Man you need some serious psychiatric help!

And by the way, he is no where near as believable as Bruce Lee. You need to step outside for some fresh air, get off your mothers pc, and then watch Bruce again.

Try Way of the Dragon, where Lee fought Norris, then tell me again who was the better practitioner and fighter.

Also, who told you James Ryan could act?

Haa Jesus now we know what is meant by Love Is Blind! Haaa

What are you? Jealous?! I guess no woman ever gushed over you (and I can understand why not). And don't use the Lord's name in vain, either.

Obviously Bruce Lee was a real martial artist and the best. I never said that James Ryan was better than Bruce Lee at martial arts. I said he was just as believable in his movie role. The fight scenes were very good and filmed perfectly.
And Bruce Lee was not exactly a great actor either.

I have a lot of respect for them both as people and actors. You, not so much!

As for the two cans and a string, it was a joke. But apparently you do not have the mindset to capture the humor. All I see is an arrogant windbag looking to pick a fight. And that tells me that you need a psychiatrist long before I do.

Don't bother to respond. I don't come to this sight very often so you will be wasting your time.

You are like 50 years old and all you had while growing up was a can and some string? When did you grow up, 1890 or something?

Im 48 and actually had a phone. Believe it or not, our home had 3 of them :)

Add to that, a color TV to boot!
