A shameful example of Republican politics

It's still appalling that 30+ years later, the murders at Kent State go unpunished. We go after Klansmen and Nazis decades later, yet the National Guardsmen who murdered four students and paralyzed another remain free.
I guess the difference is that the National Guardsmen were acting under the authority of a Republican governor eager to curry favor with a Republican President.
Ignore Michener's book on Kent State. It was commissioned by Richard Annenberg, the ultra-rightwing publisher of Readers Digest and close friend of Richard Nixon, as a part of the coverup. Michener publicized the lies that the students had threatened the Guardsmen, building a case for justifiabole homicide, lies which persist to this day.
Kent State needs to be remembered, if nothing else because we have to deal with a Republican President even more paranoid and corrupt than good old Tricky Dick and a war that is even more pointless.

Could you recommend some good books on this subject?
I just watched a documentary called The Killing Of America (1982)... an excellent 'mondo' documentary that featured film clips from the day in question. I'm from the UK and am very interested in finding out more about this tragic event in history. This must have been the start of one long slide right to Watergate for Nixon. I can't believe so many questions are still unanswered. As for books...It seems some reviwers think '13 Seconds: A Look Back at the Kent State Shootings' should be bought for the free DVD, becuase of the good documentary... but the book is not upto much. The one with the fairest reviews was 'Thirteen seconds Confrontation at Kent State' by Joe Eszterhas (1970)
'davidemartin' do you know if there are there any other good books / dvd's / articles, theories etc... anyone with any help on this, thanks in advance

Filmchap, the answers you seek might be found in nixon's biography; he wrote a few books in which he talks about kent state. From what I researched, kent state was the climax of the protests from the time Nixon gave the directive to state bombing North. The National Guardsmen who were there were provoked; the same with the 'boston massacre' in which the british soldiers were pumled with snow balls that were as hard as rocks. Hippies had not problems using violence to get their message across. And of course the democrats had no problem screaming bloody murder over this. Watergate was the uncalculated screwup in which Magruer initiated the watergate breakin using howard hunt; not knowing what he was connected to. Checkout some of nixon's books that he wrote before he died. Democrats don't want to know the extent of watergate because they are happy with what they got now.

What sickened me was the parents who told their kids that they should be shot in similar circumstances. As outsiders, what did they think of the human race?

Yes, Dbusdriver71, I totally agree. Any books written by the only president forced from office for crimes against the Constitution should be taken as gospel truth, not some sleazy attempt to rewrite history. Keep up your eagle-eyed research.
