Director's Cut Hoax

This thread will serve as an information portal to anyone curious about the so-called "Rare Director's Cut" that's been floating around on the internet.

IT's a HOAX! Nothing more. Just a simple fan edit that somebody made using a DVD copy and modern computer software. I will not post a link, as doing so will violate IMDB's guidlines. If you want to find it, you are on your own. (**Note: the original poster has now admitted the hoax. I'll keep this thread up for information purposes.)

There are numerous threads on IMDB falsely promoting this as an official director's cut; but the information is wrong. I've never heard of an Italian horror filmmaker going back ten plus years later and re-editing his previous work, and it's very doubtful to suspect that Bruno Mattei (of all people) would have been the one to do it. The uploader (possibly the editor) says that he found the VHS tape in an Australian video store. I doubt this film was ever released in Australia (not uncut at least) since they have very strict censorship policies.

The hoax video (director's cut) contains many suspicious edits, such as follows:

1. Abnormally long VHS intros.

2. Vestron logo (North American brand) on Australian VHS; implausible.

3. Film is unusually clean for a VHS tape, suggesting a DVD copy was used.

4. No deleted scenes are included in the film, only inserts from other films.

5. Scientist's voice is re-dubbed by someone who sounds younger and amateurish.

6. Custom title cards created with font that was probably found online.

7. Horror and porn trailers in the outros; unlikely combination.

8. End trailer for Zombi 3 has Bruno Mattei falsely credited as director (with custom font), instead of Lucio Fulci. Yes, I know he directed some of it; but he was never officially credited.

9. End trailer for Rats (Blood Kill) is credited to Bruno Mattei (instead of Vincent Dawn); using the exact same font as the Zombi 3 trailer.

10. Subplot that makes the lead terrorist the son of the scientist; revealed in flashbacks, which are little more than recycled footage from earlier in the film.

11. Footage of Night of the Living Dead is spliced in and looks completely out-of-place next to the color of the film.

12. Ridiculous Dinosaur DNA plot replaces the original storyline.

13. Custom made subtitles on the pre-credits screen.

14. Meaningless cuts in dialogue and some scenes.

15. Film hair seems generic and probably filtered-in with video editing software.

15. Additional street scenes halfway through the film appear to be digital shots taken either from a modern-day low budget film or a "Zombie Walk". In one scene a handheld appears to have been used.

16. Several cars that appear in the new street scenes are modern models (possibly early 2000s), and not the typical ones from 1980.

You can see the misplaced cars in these screenshots:

The uploader of this hoax film claims to be "in touch" with the distributors (Blue Underground) and claims that this version was omitted from the HOTLD/Rats Blu-ray at the last minute. I've taken steps to contact Blue Underground to verify this. If they write back I'll post their response here.

**UPDATE**
Blue Underground has finally responded back and dismissed any claims of them withholding an alternate cut. Furthermore they maintain that their Blu-ray version IS the authentic original cut, transferred from the original negative. Not that it matters much (since the initial poster has now admitted the hoax). Figured I would share my information. Enjoy the movie!

If you have anything negative to say, please refrain from doing so. I will ignore all unproductive posts. If you like the fake director's cut, then good on ya. I'm only posting this to alert the diehard film collectors out there who might be confused about the so-called "director's cut".

Thank You.

Two different HornsNHalo's on here, second clearly the hoaxer.

Tell me about it. His original account name was "donnysylar".

I've been using this website for 10 years, and have never behaved like that. When I saw that he uploaded a "director's cut" for this movie, I thought "oh neat". But when I see that I've been seriously duped into watching something totally different I decided to share my findings with other fans. Now I'm the target of an obvious troll.

I would advise ignoring any comments he makes.

reply

Tell me about it! Then this guy comes along, he's been here ten years, and changes his name from Donny Sylar to HornSNHalo. See what he did there?

He's just a troll. Ignore him.

Anyhow, like I said, there is a lot of hoaxes out there.

Here is a link to the REAL directors cut of this film. Enjoy!

Okay...I think you've learned your little lesson. ;-)

Of course this is a 'fan' edit!

lolololololololol

And we were having fun with it. You could've done the same rather than throw your nerd temper tantrum.

And, again, it's an obscure enough movie that it doesn't harm anyone. :-)

If this were "Jaws" or "The Godfather" then, yes, tampering with those films is like defacing the Mona Lisa.

But this is Mattei's "Hell of the Living Dead." A film that Ed Wood Jr. might of made if he was reborn George A. Romero in Turkey. With everything it rips off and borrows, it is fair game for this sorta of harmless art prank. Plus it's a loving tribute to the film itself. (again...not the fan editor here, just a film festival promoter, but of course I know him well and love what he did here!)

If your OBJECTION in this is some stock semi-modern footage of a zombie walk OR an added subplot about a prehistorical virus OR the nerd actor amateur scientist dub as opposed to the square-jaw macho amateur scientist as ALL being "TOO ridiculous" to add, then I guess you missed the African Elephants in New Guinea OR the forests of Spain being used to substitute for the jungles of New Guinea OR the gas that is supposed make the 3rd world eat each other to solve world hunger (because an accidental zombie outbreak is SO much better...LMAO) OR the voice dubbing which is pretty amateur already ("don't get your b alls wasted!" "since when did you care about my balls?") OR the stock footage from the clearly-10-years-older-movie-than-this (i.e. 1972 "La Vallée") which sticks out like a rotten zombie thumb.lol

Thankfully we could kept this ruse/stunt going just LONG ENOUGH until the horror festival was over and THANKFULLY no one there was aware of your posts. THANK GAWD! Guess karma was on our side, trolls be damned.haha

We probably could've PMed you and let you in on the joke. But we didn't want to risk you trying to sabotage our events, given your unstable behavior here.

Want to hear something ironic? Betcha didn't know this was part of a stunt to drum up interest in this obscure film for some limited blu-ray release parties, hence why the festival we sponsored went along with this for the local stores in the area to help out OUR sponsor who wants to get their product more exposure. This film NEEDS all the help it can get. haha. Needless to say it's a relief to finally let the cat out of the bag now that the weekend is over and the festival concluded. You almost spoiled this. ALMOST. ;-) Those trailers you teased about. What do you think were some of the movies that our film festival was showing? Doh!

And a special thanks/shout out to a certain OTHER celebrity filmmaker friend who helped us and suggested this idea. ;-) Appreciated. He even stuck around to help us clean up. Classy!

Just to be nice, and outta respect for you and fans like you, I had considered early on deleting this thread and the youtube film (part of the festival too).

But after your show of enthusiasm? Nah. Gonna leave it up. :-) In your honor...will be sure to add a little extra something on the youtube channel...just so people know they have YOU to thank for it.

For everyone else, thank you for the tremendous support and your nice PMs and amazing turn out (for those that traveled out to see us!). It was a blast.

P.S. For anyone else out there, associated with this or not, sorry for being SO wordy. Originally, our plans were to delete this thread and above video. BUT given the very passionate meltdown of our little troll buddy we felt it necessary to offer a complete explanation so no one would be confused or scratch their heads over what happened here. For the record: as we said in our Q & A, it was all in good fun. 99.9% of everyone this touched got the joke and went along with it. Thank you for that. And to any dissenters out there, or "dissenter" (to be more accurate), we even thank you for doing your part to play our own personal Inspector Jacques Clouseau! Added some last minute excitement to the proceeding. Wouldn't be fun sans SOME drama. Priceless!
Cheers everyone!

The user admits it was a fan edit in the original post. You spent all this time trying to disprove a fan edit? Get out much, brah?

It was not admitted as a fan edit when I made this thread, which is why I wrote it in the first place. But since it is now a confirmed hoax I have no interest in pursuing it any further. As I stated in my original post I will leave this thread up for information purposes only. I have nothing else to say about the matter.

 Thanks for this info. I fell for the hoax, I guess, as I watched the "director's cut" (i.e, fan cut) just yesterday and praised it on this board. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the fan cut esp. the subplot involving the scientist's terrorist son. That was pretty ingenious. Suffice to say, the flashback fooled me! The only thing that seemed suspicious was the street scene with the Caucasian zombies in the "abandoned city". Something was definitely amiss there! LOL. (I thought maybe that scene came from one of Bruno's later zombie films and he put it into the director's cut.)

Have you seen the little piggies crawling in the dirt?

Thanks for a thorough and proper debunking.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.
