Yes. I remember watching HUMONGOUS in the theaters back in later 1982 and I owned a VHS copy at one time. The movie is indeed dark for most of its duration. This is because the setting is in a gloomy time of year and the rest is set in the early evening, nighttime, and in the house. For a low-budget horror film, it was typical of its time and I give it a good rating.

It seems that is the curse of Paul Lynch, the director, just look at his most popular film, Prom Night, that one is really dark as well.

Meat's meat, and man's gotta eat!!

I think it might depend on what version you have.... I haven't seen any of the others to compare to, but Ive recently obtained the Australian Embassy original VHS, and although there are a few gloomy scenes, its certainly not too dark to see whats going on.

In fact, having heard from many sources that this picture is nearly unwatchable, I was pleasantly surprised that I could make everything out, I kept on waiting for the "unwatchable scenes" but they never happened.

I would say the only scene on this version which suffered from "bad lighting" is near the beginning, when the "bad brother" (sorry cant remember his name!) heads into the forest on his own, you can see faint sunlight between the trees but no definition on him moving around! the next scene with the poor dog was fairly dark also, but not enough to ruin the film.

I've got dvd versions of "the final terror" and "the forest" which have completely unwatchable night-time scenes, so I was fairly happy with this one!

So, I would confirm that there are a few gloomy scenes, but I'm guessing it would depend on the transfer... possibly some are worse than others??

I was hoping that it was just the video release that was dark and it would be cleared up if it ever made it to dvd.
