Full/Uncut Version....was it ever available on vhs?

This movie was the scariest movie I ever saw since I saw it on HBO when I was a little kid back in the early 80's...My mom had taped it on a beta tape when it came on HBO and I watched it a few times several years ago. It was the good, uncut version too...I may have to try and find that beta tape and a beta player for that much lol. Believe it or not, the beta version we have is very clear and not dark..you can see everything in every scene too!

reply

I wish I could see that version of the movie. The copy I have is so dark that it is just to hard to follow what is going on. If it's the uncut version, what was cut out?

reply

Apparently the rape scene at the beginning of the movie was extremely gratuitous and went on for several minutes before the dogs maul the rapist, as opposed to the edited version, in which it goes on for a minute at most. Also, the unrated version supposedly features extended death sequences for all of the characters.

reply

Interesting... The movie did seem cut up to me. Leave it to the MPAA to chop out all the good stuff.

reply

yeah, it seemed heavily cut. however im sure the dvd release will be unrated and uncut.

"how about... a royal flush!" *loren avedon kicks a cauldron of boiling water into the bad guys*

reply

We can only hope. Just as long as we're not stuck with cut version Region 1 DVDs like the Friday the 13ths and My Bloody Valentine.

reply

I had for several years a complete, uncut version that was recorded from Cinemax in the mid-80s. The Embassy video release I got later on is cut substantially. I wish I still had the recording! The original video is cut and murky.

Anyway, the main differences are:

In the opening rape sequence, on Embassy's video, the guy slaps the girl around and smokes, etc., then he says some ugly lines to her, then just as he begins to rape her, the dogs show up and attack him. Then, she calls off the dogs and hits him, then it cuts to her eyes, then the credits start.

However, in the uncut version, as someone said, after the set-up, the rape is shown for quite a while before the dogs show up. I remember it as quite disturbing because it is done from the point of view of the woman being raped. The shot is from the ground, looking up, and you see the guy's facial expressions, and hear her cries, for what seems like a couple of minutes. THEN, the dogs arrive, and attack the guy. This attack goes on slightly longer, too. Then, there is a lengthy shot of him laying there with his throat torn open. There is blood all over his mouth and neck, and he is gasping for her to help him. There is also two shots of his leg, on which the flesh has been stripped off to the bone, and he is quivering all over. Then, she, after studying him for a moment, grabs a large rock and starts banging him in the head with it. He starts quivering and shaking all over, as she hits him at least three times that I recall. Then, he finally lays there still. And, THEN it shows her eyes. Then the credits. It is far more disturbing in the uncut version, and runs close to three minutes longer.

The only other noticeable cuts that I recall are when the younger sister of the main character sees some bodies, she runs to a stream and , in the uncut version, we see vomit coming out of her mouth. This is skipped and just shows her by the lake in the cut form. And there is a longer shot of some dead bodies hanging, with blood on them. That shot is still shown, but it a shorter glimpse. I believe a brief glimpse of nudity was cut in a sequence where a guy is feeling a woman's butt in her bikini, as well. Uncut, it showed him groping her bare butt longer.

Anyway, those are the cuts I recall. Maybe if there is ever a DVD, it will feature the uncut version, and a brighter print.

reply

Also, did you realize that the rapist at the beginning is "The Hitchiker" host from the 80s HBO show, "The Hitchiker"?

reply

I miss The Hitchiker, it's funny he's the rapist. I have a taped VHS copy of Humongous I got off Cinemax in the early '90's, but I haven't seen the movie since I taped it. I remember hearing good things about the movie, and when it showed up breifly on that channel, I decided I must tape it. But I remember not liking it as I watched it, so I never watched it again, and I don't remember anything at all besides it being really dark, which I think did ruin my initial viewing. I still have the tape though, so I will have to see if I have the good version. Lately I have been getting back into all these old slasher flicks so maybe the movie will turn out better this time around. If Embassy released the cut version who originally released the uncut version? HBO/Cinemax had to pick it up from somewhere.

reply

Surprisingly, I found my Cinemax-recorded VHS of Humongous, and I think it may be the longer, uncut version, but I'm not sure. The rape scene in the beginning matches what other viewers of the uncensored version saw, with the POV shots from the victim, the full frontal nudity, the scene lasting longer than a mere minute, and the dog attack was pretty gruesome, with the shredded ankle and ripped out neck. Plus the victim bashed in the attackers head with a brick a couple times. But then the rest of the movie was pretty tame. The killings seemed trimmed and shortened. Not a bad movie, I liked it this time around. My VHS held up pretty damn good for being 16 years old, but then again I haven't watched it since I taped it. I put it to DVD and used this filter to lighten up the darker scenes and clear up that VHS fuzz.

reply

I downloaded a weird version from a website. It seems to be a little cut, but less cut than others. compairing it to my r-rated copy, the rape scene is longer showing the POV humping, but the shot where he exposes her brests is gone. also, during the dog attack, we see the torn open leg, but once the dog stops we don't hear the guy ask for help, and she only hits him once (in my r-rated copy she hits him twice). dunno what's up with that. the downloaded copy seems to have been lighteded, so it's less dark

"I put it to DVD and used this filter to lighten up the darker scenes and clear up that VHS fuzz."

What program did you use?

My head hurts, my teeth itch, my feet stink, and I don't love Jesus.

reply

The first time I saw this film was on HBO in 1985, and they also showed the uncut version, as I remember the rape scene vividly. Although, like many others have stated, the rest of the film is very dark. This does not hinder me from enjoying it, however, I think it lends to the atmosphere. I have a taped VHS copy, which came from the Embassy version, and yes it is the cut version. I can't believe that no one has mentioned the parallels between the movies characters and those from Scooby Doo!!

Someone's uploaded what looks like an edited version to YouTube. It runs 86 1/2 mins. but some of the end credits are chopped off so add another minute or so and you get the 88 min. version. From what I've read about the rape scene, this version edits it heavily, since no nudity is clearly seen. Check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROAwcQvqmU0

Been looking for this for awhile so it's disappointing to find only a cut version.

reply

I kno this is a reply to a thread made a long time ago but i just wanted to point something out!!!

the user is correct about the bhs version being heavily cut....6mins to be exact....although i want to say that i also have an original print of this movie by embassy home video...the difference is that my video is a pre cert version and is released 4 years before embassys official release...the BBFC states the embassy version is 88 min, but my vhs version runs at 93mins (the official imdb time is 94mins)...which makes me beleive my version is the complete version and uncut???

i havent seen this in years but im converting all my vhs to dvd...so im gonna be watching it soon!!!

ill keep you all informed!!

I have recently purchased\viewed the Embassy video that was released in Australia and NZ around mid 1984. It appears to be the uncut version, with the opening rape scene and dog attack as described by above posters. The tape has the Australian M rating on the cover next to the title.

It must have been sourced from a different & uncut master as opposed to what was used for the US R rated Embassy release. This is perplexing, because 3 Embassy titles that I can recall that were released Downunder—VICE SQUAD, PROM NIGHT & PARADISE—were sourced from cut UK masters. The BBFC website informs that 7secs were cut from the theatrical release in 83' & 1m 3sec from the VHS release in 1987. It is a possibility that the Australian VHS release in 84' was sourced from the UK print with the 7secs of cuts; but I would have to put the opening offending scene under more scrutiny.

reply

I saw this on Showtime back in the early 80s when I was a tween. It scared the hell out of me & every few years I check Netflix to see if it is out on DVD, but so far no luck! Would love to see it again, although I'm sure it will not be as creepy as it was back then. I do not recall the extended rape scene at the beginning so I'm sure Showtime was showing the cut version.

reply

I am the same way. I taped it off HBO long ago, in the early 80's. Lucky for me, I used VHS tape. I just watched it earlier ago, for Halloween time (October 31, 2007). It was pretty good quality, but a humming noise with the sound. Not sure which version it was but HBO said it was rated R. I wish this movie was more popular. It is very scary with a good "ghost" story to it, "Hell Night" meets "Friday the 13th part 2."

Canadian VHS on the Astral label is unedited. (Shades of the similar RITUALS, which Embassy Home Entertainment also bungled.) I THINK - but don't take my word for it - the Dutch VHS was, as well. It's under the title DOG ISLAND.

The very long POV shot of Page Fletcher thrusting towards the camera is unpleasant, to say the least.

As for the American Embassy video, everybody should throw that in the garbage. Not just because of the big trim 5 and a half minutes in, but for the ATROCIOUS telecine. John Herzog may not have had a lot of talent, but that tape makes him look incompetent. On the big screen, the night shots in this film had very striking red and yellow highlights in a number of scenes. You can't see any of that on this awful transfer, because all those scenes are reduced to a black and blue mess! Heck, you can't even see anything at all in the scene where the "monster" kills the dog. It's appalling they had the audacity to knowingly put this junk on the market.

Most of the other home video releases out there at least did a decent job of approximating the original color and lighting scheme.

You're welcome. For the Astral video, your best bet is the eBay Canada site. It pops up there from time to time. I should note that Astral's print is really rough. Now that I think about it, all the international tapes I've looked at came from beat-up theatrical prints. American Embassy had the best condition print at their disposal (the only real damage I recall was around the reel changes - cue marks and scratches) - they just messed it up big time when transfering it.

I'm on the opposite coast from my video library at the moment, so I can't double-check anything, but I do have some notes on hand that I made years ago in regards to the trims. Filmscholar had a pretty decent recall, but, as with most of our memories, time has distorted things a little. According to my notes, the cut footage amounts to about 67 seconds, not nearly 3 minutes, and is confined to the one scene at the beginning. There are no changes after the opening credits roll, and the only footage from that point on that is missing on the American Embassy VHS are some frames at the ends and beginnings of the reels.

These are the notes I made in regard to the trims to the rape and the dog attack. 15 shots have been removed, and 2 more have been pared down. The 97 minute runtime commonly given for the unedited cut is not correct. It runs 94 minutes. The U.S. cut runs 93 minutes.

Shots removed (rape) - 28 seconds

1. Tom spreading Ida's legs apart - 3 seconds
2. Ida's POV - Tom starting to rape Ida. Ida screams, "No, Tom!" - 10 seconds
3. Ida's POV - A second shot of Tom raping Ida - 9 seconds
4. Ida's POV - A third shot of Tom raping Ida - 3 seconds
5. Ida's POV - A fourth shot of Tom raping Ida - 2 seconds
6. One shot of a dog racing to the scene - 14 frames (In the unedited version, the 4 Ida POV shots of Tom are intercut with 3 shots of the German Shepherds running to help Ida after breaking out of their pen. In the edited version, the POV shots are of course gone, but 2 of these dog shots remain. The last is removed.)

Shots trimmed (rape) - 22 seconds

1. Ida's POV - Tom finishing up. Ida says, "Oh my god, no," as Tom starts to get off her. The tail end of this shot, in which Tom turns his head as he hears the dogs coming, remains in the edited release, but most of it is gone.

Shots trimmed (dog attack) - 1 second

1. The latter half of a shot in which Tom's mauled ankle is briefly visible

Shots removed (dog attack) - 6 seconds

1. Dog biting Tom's arm - 8 frames
2. Dog biting Tom's face - 2 seconds
3. Dog biting Tom's arm with a bloody wrist visible - 1 second
4. Another shot of dog biting Tom's arm with a bloody wrist visible - 1 second
5. Another shot of dog biting Tom's bloodied arm - 2 seconds

Shots removed (after Ida calls off the hounds) - 10 seconds

1. Tom spitting up blood - 1 second
2. Close-up of Tom's mauled, quivering ankle - 2 seconds
3. Another shot of Tom's face while convulsing. He says, "Help," which is overdubbed into a different shot in the edited release. (The one in which Ida takes her first swing at Tom's head.) - 4 seconds
4. A shot of Ida that followed the previous shot, and was cut for that reason - 3 seconds

Approximate runtimes (not including distributor logo and possibly a few seconds short due to the missing frames at the reel changes):

92:27 - edited
93:34 - unedited
89:47 - PAL unedited

So, if you have a copy that has the shots mentioned above, then you've got the one you want. And, presumably, Paul Lynch's director's cut.

Didn't make a note about that, so the same.

I have never come across the cut dtsolomo mentioned back in October. In every cut I've viewed, she bashes him in the head twice.
